Note to Andrew. How is it that so few Labour Councillors engage on this website or others. Their posts have been rare for years. Perhaps most are illiterate, or is it that they are just too frightened? Any way hiding behind a Wall (sorry Ray) of silence makes them questionably disreputable. How aware are you of the history of the local Labour administrations' antics over a long period.Do you support Council Tax going up way over the rate of inflation during the previous Labour years - sometimes astronomically? Do you support the current administration slashing where the most vulnerable are hit? What do you know about the management of waste and complacency in this Council? Did you know that the son of the former Viscount Stansgate is supposed to have increased the Council debt when he was Labour Deputy Leader - significantly? Why is it that Labour Party here wants to find £85M when the opposition parties say that such a high sum of cuts and spend is not necessary? Why don't the local Labour party follow Ed Balls and Ed Milliband by saying that cuts should be at a slower pace than the one put forward by The Tories. What do you and Councillor Bell know about hypocrisy? What actually do you know about how much each party supports and opposes in Ealing? Who said the Tories "oppose every local Council cut"? Your words - not mine.I don't like  alot of things the Tories do. However over the last 100 years they have shown themselves to have a better grasp of how to manage money than the Labour party who have had this this country nearly broke on a number of occasions. Wilson Callaghan and Brown to name just a few.Have you got anything to say?

Andrew,The Ealing Labour group are telling quite a few fibs about the cuts.  First off they are about 28% of the council's grant from central government.  The council also has income from council tax and fees and charges, eg parking charges, etc.  That means that the total loss of revenue is more like 12.5%.  This is hard to deal with but not as horrendous as it is made out by the Labour group.  There are many ways to make the savings required.  The Conservative group have challenged very few of the choices that Labour has made.  We would have done many things similarly.  Where we differ is that the Labour group typically look to protect the council as an institution first.  The Tory group tends to favor user groups.  For example we have challenged day centre closures.  We might have offered the buildings to volunteers to run.  Labour wanted to sell the buildings to contribute towards three new council offices so could not take this route.  We might have challenged officers to slim the senior ranks more harshly and more quickly.  We certainly would not have trimmed union reps by 20% whilst halving park rangers and envirocrime officers.  The Conservative group accepts that savings have to be made. We would have made different choices.  In 2010 - 2014 Labour say they need to make savings of £85 million.  About half of this is loss of grant.  The rest is new spending by the administration, inflation and interest on capital new programmes.  In 2006 - 2010 the Tories carefully saved £60 million without affecting services.
