when i first moved to "London" 30 years ago I picked Ealing largely because of it's huge Thames Delta blues heritage (not to mention it was near where i worked and the only civilised area nearby) and was from the start massively disappointed at the lack of local live music. And the total lack of recognition of historic events at what's now known as the Red Room. Now i'm an old fart I can join Al for the gigs up town (if i feel like spending nearly 6 quid return on my oyster card!) but by hunting around have found fabulous jazz nights at the rose and crown, the plough, and the brewery tap brentford. and johnny bull runs a fantastic open mic kind of night at the selfsame Tap on fridays. all ages, all types of music (well, within reason - no grime or dubstep, whatever they are) just about the best night of musical fun i know. But you're right - if i was still in my 20s and 30s i'd feel very let down by our neighbourhood. quite a lot goes on at the kings head acton i believe, thanks to its proximity to the acton music college complex. nice boozer too..
