Calling all book clubs
Today, 8 September, is International Literacy Day. Here in the UK we take literacy for granted, but in the developing world it’s a different story. Are you a member of a book club or reading circle? Would you like to help a local Ealing charity that helps children in Uganda acquire reading skills? Uganda Development Services (UDS), based in the Lido Centre in Mattock Lane, maintains a Library and Study Centre in Kamuli, eastern Uganda, providing access to books until 9pm at night. But for students living in the surrounding areas the books have to be taken to them. To do this UDS provides secondary schools with a book box - filled with books linked to the Ugandan National Curriculum. Each book box costs about £350.Could your group help? A monthly donation of £10 from three book clubs would allow at least 500 more students to improve their reading skills and exam results. To find out more, or to contribute, visit http://bit.ly/qT2y3i or call UDS at 020 3286 3306.Thanks for reading this – and for thinking of those who cannot.www.ugandadev.org.uk
