"registered membership" - ? What on earth is that? Can this comment be substantiated? I heard no such evidence brought up in the courts."doing it for political reasons, ie lefties etc and those with anarchist tendencies"There is no evidence for this at all. I didn't see a single placard, politcal banner or insignia, or hear a political chant of any kind. This is pure fantasy. Most agree this was opportunist "shopping with violence".If the riots in Ealing were organuised by "lefties and those with anarchist tendencies", believe me, they would still be in the back room of a pub debating the constitution and terms of reference for the Organising Committee, and debating the need for allocated representation of various minority groups. In fact, the only efforts I have observed for "stirring up trouble and social unrest" over the last decades in the UK has come from far right groups such as the BNP and EDL who have held provocative marches which always end in violence. I cite Luton, Birmingham and Coventry as examples.Funnily enough, members of these right-wing groups did appear on the streets in areas such as Eltham, congregating mainly outside pubs in an effort to "defend our homes". (Apparently, this can best be done after consuming several pints of lager). Happily, most managed to find their way back to those very same homes later in the night, though much the worse for drink. I have to say, I would prefer the official forces of the law to carry out such tasks. That's what I pay my taxes for. Isn't it?

Well, the first lesson here is NEVER to watch Sky News, particularly with the awful, bigotted, ignorant air-head Kay Burley!  She's vile. You don't have to travel far on the internet to understand why she is loathed by so many. (But it may be instructive to do so!).She comes from the same editorial stable that produces Fox News in the USA and the 'News of the World' in the UK. Enough said.Obviously I was appalled by the way the Police acted in the past. (I lived through it too. I haven't forgotten Blair Peach). The Scarman Report highlighted many issues about inherent racist attitudes in the Met, and I would like to think that things have changed - not completely resolved - but at least improved. But I think we are all agreed that these riots were NOT a race issue - they were an economic and social issue. With regard to social housing - of course Ealing has social housing, but we do not have the large 'sink estates' with their attendent problems that other areas of the City do. The point I was making was that that is one of the reasons I believe the rioters came from outside the area.I love the dear old "Grauniad" but when they fill space with articles stating that "we're witnessing socio-spatial convergence", I just sigh and turn the page. *grin*And honestly, I have not been offended by anything above at all! (Actually I was only seeking clarification of a statement). It is heartening that nothing in this thread is personal or abusive and I have read it all with great interest - I warmly welcome the interesting debate.Oh, and did I mention - I love Ealing too!

Grant Shapps has pledged to support landlords who evict tenants found to have been rioting. The housing minister, writing on the social networking website Twitter, stated: ‘I will back social landlords who evict tenants involved in any rioting.’Mr Shapps’ comments follow a statement yesterday from Greenwich Council saying the authority would seek to evict council tenants found guilty of criminal acts.Other councils have now followed Greenwich’s lead, and Westminster is one of them.It is absolutely appropriate for condemnation to be given against those who committed acts of criminality in the riots and for the criminal justice system to deal with them as appropriate. However, is it then right for local authorities and housing associations to further penalise tenants when their counterparts in the private sector will not have additional sanctions imposed? From much of the media coverage, it seems that a large number of those involved were youths, teenagers and young adults. Will their parents be liable for their criminal acts by having their tenancies rescinded? Furthermore, if eviction was sought and granted against those who were involved in the riots, would other crimes (for example car crime or shop lifting) then be added to a list of crimes where eviction could be sought? This sort of ill-thought through initiative sounds very much like a knee jerk reaction, typical of Tories not engaging their brain, which is surely not needed at this time. Why doesn't Shapps ever, ever think before he speaks? Precisely which element of housing law does he propose landlords use? You could try the Housing Act, but its quite a spurious claim - you'd have difficulty proving that the behaviour of rioters, outside of their own estate has significantly threatened the safety of those on it, or has impeded the ability of the landlord to provide a management service. I'm pretty sure that any decent defence team would destroy a HO trying to prove either case. Grant Shapps - you know nothing about housing, other than attempting to demonise those who use it. You're typical of the Tories whose lack of empathy or understanding of anyone who wasn't born wealthy has helped to create this uncaring "Big Society".
