Printer repair recommendations please

My printer has given up the ghost - the paper feed isn't working properly.  It's  good printer if not a little old so I would much rather see how much a repair costs than buy another one.Any local recommendations?

Mark its a canon pixma ip5000 looks like it is around 6-7 years old! The latest versions are only around £70-£80 although it is a little on the slow side for printing so if I did need to buy a new one then I would be looking at a higher spec anyway.

It could still be paper debris, but if you pulled against the motor then either the stepper motor or the driver chip could have failed. There are optical sensors to detect the paper and head positions, and they can be blocked by debris, but are normally aligned and then fixed and then difficult to move.  There are repairers around, but unfortunately it is usually more expensive to get someone to repair than replace it.

Chris it's not a paper clip as my printer is nicely situated on it's own within a cupboard. I had a problem with the paper feed and think I caused the issue by taking some paper out whilst it was trying to rectify itself.

A common cause is a paperclip dropped in by accident or paper debris. Unplug the printer, turn it upside down and shake it.

You could try the computer shop by the clock tower in Hanwell P C Microfix Ltd 149 Uxbridge Road, London W7 3ST 020 8579 7474 They are very good, from past experience, but I have to say that printers are now so cheap that anything other than a basic repair will, sadly, probably exceed the cost of a new one. ‎
