Fly tipping problem

Some lazy selfish s.o.b. has dumped a load of rubbish in the communal alleyway adjacent to my house.  It contains broken glass, bits of wood with nails sticking out of it and tins of paint.  The council say that as it is regarded as being on private land they will not move it but will write to the person they suspect of being responsible and ask them to move it, and then if they don't they will move it and bill the suspect.  I have no idea how long all that is supposed to take but in the meantime there is an eyesore next to my home which also presents a huge risk to the kids who play out in the street and will surely inevitably be drawn towards it.  I could of course arrange and pay for its removal  but that is only encouraging the culprit to think they can get away with it so is a last resort.Does anybody have any ideas or advice?

and to take this away himself he would have to be a registered waste carrier so you should check that he is. Nowadays you need to make sure that the contractor includes for taking away building rubbish as it is not considered household waste.With landfill charges rising each year the rules have been getting stricter.Acton seem to be having a craze of Yard Sales perhaps this will help when people are moving on and have too much waste they haven't dealt with.  Along with freecycle etc.  (Half a motorised wheelchair would probably be useful to someone if the other half is!)

Our alleyways are gated but there is a segment in front of the gate which isn't.  This case turned out to be a neighbour's contractor.Interesting what you say about broken glass.  Once we put something out well wrapped in newspaper, but a bit slipped out, and the men said it should be labelled.  So next time we labelled it and they said they wouldn't take it because they knew what it was.  You can't win.

We had the same thing happen to us - someone left half a motorised wheelchair(?!!), bags of refuse and child's high chair in the private parking area being our building.  We had to pay to get it taken away.  It's so frustrating and also unnerving to think that people are creeping around behind the house at night.

Glad to see that you seem to have a solution.  Some of the alleyways are gated.  I suppose this does mean that neighbours are more likely to talk to each other.  Then you can tell each other when you are having a clear out and perhaps share a trip to the Reuse and Recycling Centre.  Broken glass needs to be wrapped well and go in the black bin waste otherwise - not recycling - something which can seem surprising when you sometimes see them crushing the bottles in the recycling lorry!

Ha ha Mark.  Don't think I wasn't tempted but it was too bulky for that.  Anyway,when I went out to clear up the broken glass, the householder whose rubbish it was approached me and is dealing with it.

I think they were surmising it from somebody who was having work done in the street. But it might not have been them.  It looks like somebody has cleared out their shed. When I called the Council again they said they would serve a notice on all of us who share the alleyway to have it cleared or pay up.

Interesting that the Council is so sure they know who it is. If they're regular offenders then they need to take to them court to teach them a lesson.
