Grated horseradish

Does anyone know where I can buy grated horseradish in jars? Used to be able to get it but everything now is creamed. Have tried Tesco, Sainsburys, Waitrose, and Richardsons. Thanks !

Hi BarbaraSloe Gin as made by mums in a hurry.Pick Sloes from secret location in Elthorne Park.  Freeze them. Get bottle of value gin from Tesco.  Decant half into a screw top bottle. Take sloes from freezer and bash around a bit. fill about a finger deep of sloes in each botlle and add about half as much sugar.  Screw on lids and shake.  Put in boot of car and drive around shaking bottle - am bad driver - this helps. Drink after about a month. :)

Charles, you are wrong about dogs not being allowed on allotment sites. This is what the rules say (see Ealing Council website):A tenant may take his or her dog to the allotment, as long as the dog is under control at all times and not allowed to walk on any plots other than the tenant’s. Note that if a dog is aggressive or particularly nervous, then this might constitute a nuisance to others and you may be asked not to bring the dog to the allotments in future.

Of course, pragmatically, one might take the view that it is not the leaves that one eats but the roots, and that urine makes for quite a good nitrogenous fertilizer!

Really, really simple.Take a bottle of gin (preferably a litre), and drink half of it :-) Cut or prick the sloes and drop into the half-empty bottle so that they displace the remaining gin. Add around 150g of sugar (caster is best as it dissolves quickly). All you have to do now is turn or agitate the bottle daily for a week, then weekly for a month or two ... by which time it will be ready to drink (but it is really best kept for a few months).Also works really well with vodka.

Yeah, but that is because 98% of your average sloe berries are above the typical spraying height of your normal mutt.Horseradish is not so lucky...

There are some lovely Sloe trees there which are excellent for making Sloe Gin. The 2010 brew was particularly potent and had no after taste of dog wee at all. Honest.

I rise to the defence of my  ex-colleague Nigel Sumner. He truely cares about the environment. He has flooded Hanger Hill ward with flowering bulbs, hanging baskets, spruced up green spaces, cleared rubbish out of woods, ensured Barclays sports ground is designated Metropolitan Open Space much to the chagrin of the owner who lives in Taiwan and is biding his time to develop the land.  On green issues, Nigel leads not follows.  Not being as green as he is, I find him occassionally infuriating but you cannot douubt his genuineness.

Loads of horseradish to be had in Boston Manor Park.My late father-in-law (a greengrocer by trade) used to dig it regularly from there.

On a more positive note, have you considered trying some of the Japanese grocers and greengrocers in Acton, horseradish is quite an important part of Japanese cuisine and is often mixed with wasabi to make wasabi paste.As for wild horseradish, it can be harvested any time of the year as it is the established roots that you want. They run deep and you need to push a spade (or fork) in a good eight to ten inches to loosen the soil around the horseradish; pulling by the leaves is not very effective so its best to get your hands as far down the root as you can manage. Lasr year B&Q had horseradish roots for planting in the garden, they may have them this year!

It grows wild on our allotment.  There's none at the moment but I would be happy to lift some and peel it for you but you would have to grate it yourself.  Let me know if you want it and I'll make sure to collect some when it grows.

PennyIf you have the room for it (a medium sized tub) to grow; I would suggest planting a couple of thongs of horseradish root would be the answer and you will have your own, 'fresh as can be' supply.
