Save Ealing's Centre v Tony Palmer

Tony Palmer is quite wrong when he says that SEC think regeneration of Ealing's Centre will come from retail.When SEC prepared the Vision in 2008 we agreed that retail was low on the list of what was needed. What a silly waste of strong rhetorical skills - a good case to be made, undermined by Mr Palmer’s pomposity and sense of self-importance - AND he has the nerve to criticise politicians, amateur and professional, who simply indulge in the same game!By the way, does Mr Palmer have any financial interest in the outcome?

Reading Tony Palmer's rather angry article on Ealing Today left me rather puzzled.  He seems to be angry with everyone including his own Save Ealing Centre Colleagues.  But it does seem unfair to single out our local MP Angie Bray for her meeting about Ealing Broadweay station.  I know that Angie has been organising meetings to discuss interim improvements to both Ealing Broadway and Acton Mainline stations for some years now so I don't think they were ever meant to be a forum to discuss Tony Palmer's ideas on how to create a piazza, underground parking, hotels and concert halls on the Arcadia site.  Maybe that is why he didn't approve of the way she ran the meeting he attended.

Mike,I wouldn't take any notice of what Tony Palmer says.Anyone who can use the term "third world" as an insult does not deserve to be taken seriously.

I agree entirely; I live in Ealing and I want services that support mysef anf my neighbours, not a "commute in" retail centre. What both the elected and employed council officers forget is that people actually live in Ealing: it is not a shopping-mall-building-game. Two adminstrations ago the Labour Council was congratulating itself on creating a thriving "night economy"; look what it did to Ealing! All our police are tied up policing this nasty mess of a night economy rather than responding to residents' needs (as Eric Leach has found").
