I stand by my original posting - some folk from Chiswick appear to be unable to use their initiative when looking for information.

If I'm not mistaken you were also a regular contributor to the Ealing Gazette in the past also, Robin. Not that I always agreed with what you said but you helped make the letters page the most (sometimes only) interesting part of the paper.The Chiswick forum seems to have been a victim of its own success. It suffers from some fairly persistent and underhand guerrilla advertising and the more useful and interesting posts are often drowned out by what is essentially chat between groups of friends which hold no interest to anyone else. Take that own and I don't think Chiswick is that much busier than Acton which I believe represents its community far better.I've used discussion boards before where a clique forms and this can be very damaging as they often gang up and target individual members they don't like. Reading between the lines there seems to have been an element of this on the Chiswick forum.

It's a shame we cannot "copy" this thread on to the Chiswick forum - it would be sure to give people a good laugh (especially Penny's comments) - and yes, some of your remarks probably apply to me as much as to certain others who post on W4.When I began posting on Chiswick eighteen months ago I quickly discovered that it was impossible to have a polite or reasoned political debate. I quickly gave up trying. Now I find the most effective thing is to issue subtle one-line insults against my Tory opponents, with a few unflattering nicknames thrown in for good measure. Perhaps I would have been more useful if I had been around in the days of AMJA (he left just before I started). Much as I hated everything he stood for, at least he would have provided me with some good tough meat to get my teeth into. During the 1990s, he and I had some absolutely vitriolic rows in the letters columns of the now-defunct "Brentford Chiswick & Isleworth Times". Ahhhh... happy days!

Ealing has had its moments - the odd restaurant thread and some pretty dodgy migrant debates - but is somewhere between peasceful and moribund at the moment wouldn't you say?I am just postponing starting a big piece of work devising a test for use in recruitment - wouldn't be posting if I knew where to start. Could go and deliver newsletters instead more productively I suppose.Forums were made for procrastination!

Actually what does amaze me about the people on the Chiswick Forum is how helpless they are at sorting out simple problems. It's almost a case of "Does anyone know how to turn on such and such television? I am having problems in doing so".

Think Alan is right when he talks about quality vs. quantity. Whenever I looked at the Chiswick noticeboard many of the messages seemed to be not about the area and from a relatively small group of not very interesting people who didn't let their lack of knowledge stop them repeatedly expressing their opinion. It seemed to become a meeting point for people with too much time on their hand. Just recently it seems to have become as 'dull' as Ealing i.e. more local people exchanging ideas and information in a relatively unconfrontational way. I suppose if you don't actually live in the area this may be less interesting but it does make the noticeboard more generally useful.

A lot of them obviously don't need to work or run their own businesses so can do what they like. Also, they are all so clever and well educated they feel a need to educate everyone else. And dare I say, they like the sound of their own voices...preferably braying in restaurants but if they can't do that, they enjoy a good rant online. Tee hee

But there are many more posters there - some of them prolific, others not.It has really, really boring content today with most of the bright provocative sparks banned and the others lacking challenge and stimulation.And Ealing is quiet even compared to Acton!

I can't work out how people have so much time on their hands to post so prolifically in the first place! There are literally hundreds of posts a day over on the Chiswick Forum and today, here, there has been 10!

It'll blow over in a day or so - these things always do.though the original banning - and the subsequent ones seem pretty unwarranted to me...the forum moderators never seem to intervene where there is overt bullying (have been a victim over in Chiswick) or just nastiness but then go off on a crusade of their own with no explanation

Wonderful entertainment popping in and having a look, but it looks like lots of people have now been banned just for sticking up for someone!  I wish they would come here and liven things up a bit. (I hope I don't get banned for saying that).
