Many business users report that one Linux box can do the work of about five similar boxes running Microsoft.

It is not sensible to run a large stack of computers unless they are housed in a rack so that a single box can be removed for hardware maintenance.

It runs instead of it. Comparing an older pc with Linux and a new laptop on windows 7 and the older linux box is a lot faster. And also it is cheaper. so why don't govt and other people use it????? because consultants that advise govt swallow the lies given out about it not being robust or safe. the money you save on license costs can be better spent on good staff to run the show. Oracle use linux to wun their database servers.

It is usually written in a high level language that can be compiled to run on any hardware with only minor adjustments.It provides a choice of window managers, (each accompanied by a basic selection of software), for those who need one, although it is not always necessary to run one, for example on a server.There may be a need to run some kind of virus detection if it is linked to computers running Microsoft.Software packages such as WINE ("Wine Is Not an Emulator") can run some software originally written for Microsoft.Microsoft will happily run in a virtual computer provided by Free Open Source Software, if you really wish to inflict pain on yourself.
