The madness of Mugabe.

This power-crazed lunatic Mugabe has no intention of surrendering his position to the rightfully and democratically elected opposition in Zimbabwe.Even now he has mustered his bully-boys to terrorise and kill those who want him and his filthy henchmen out of power. This cannot be allowed to continue.The gutless nations in Africa will not lift a hand to help the oppressed in Zimbabwe and sit on their hands looking the other way. They even praise the tyrant.Rhodesia was a magnificent place in the past before Mugabe stole everything that he could for personal egrandisement and left the place a total basket case.The United Nations - a toothless tiger - indulges in the usual talkfests but does nothing.Britain made Rhodesia what it was. Britain should now seek to redress the balance. If that means invasion and brute force then so be it. The criminal hordes would surely show their true colours when confronted by a power greater than they and would flee back into the bush to save their worthless skins.The time for idle and high-faluting rhetoric is over. The time for action is now here.Come on you Ealonians and pressure Mr. Brown to start the charge. After all his predecessor Mr. Blair had no problem in Iraq and Afghanistan.

No I wasn't thinking we should invade - (tongue-in-cheek) we have no oil interests there -  but if the world's press and opinion formers denounced the regime and offered morale support to dissenters, that would help.  It's a pity that, it seems to me, South Africa is refusing to condemn Mugabe despite trying to close her borders to desperate refugees.

I`ve read recently that severe problems have been part of the Mugabe leadership for over twenty years rather than the last four or five. Therefore is it madness through a mixture of wilful misgovernment, Stalinist land reform, tribal loyalties and embezzlement, or as I`ve been thinking lately does Mugabe have a recognisable mental condition to those who study health issues?

As I said it's unfortunate what is happening in Zimbabwe but is it our business to get involved?No it's the business of South Africa not us. This government have set us up as the world police, and use our men and women service people as canon fodder, our Nato "allies" have opted out of any help for our overstretched troops, and if any help is forthcoming it is usually within a safe zone.  In addition to this, we are now the worlds health care centre,can we afford to be.....what do you think, solution?

Other than Zimbabwe being a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, as is Mozambique, what involvement should we have in Zimbabwe?I agree it is a very unfortunate situation but I don't see why we should get involved and, if we did, what would happen to the stability of the neighbouring countries?After all when the US presidential elections were contested a few years back we didn't invade the ex-colony and make them accept the Queen as head of state and Blair as first minister, let alone sing a new National Anthem (the tune of which would be familiar to Americans pre-1930s.As I said it's unfortunate what is happening in Zimbabwe but is it our business to get involved?

Barbara  Yes you are missing some rather poor satire,Johns previous posts have all had a rascist element concerning the way the UK has allowed "uncontrolled immigration",it's no longer the place he remembers before he left our shores years ago for New Zealand.   I suspect that the praise he heaps on the way Rhodesia used to be,is an overt reference  to the oppresive white rule of Ian Smith, which was great for white folk,less so for black folk.  Yes of course the World should be doing something, Mugabe is outrageous,but it would be really nice,if just for once it wasn't Britain that instigates any military action, which is exactly what it will take.

Surely it's not because they are black (or am I missing some satire).  It's despotism, it's inhumanity, it's shameful to the whole human race.  How, how, do we shrug and allow the likes of Mugabe, Amin, Stalin etc to get away with such crimes against a whole nation of people?  The whole world should be condemning Mugabe, loud and constantly.

Mr.Brown regrets he's unable to come today,but I can see no reason why one or both of the Antipodean countries can't sort it out. It's nice (strange but still nice)to read of your concern for the black people in Africa...Keep it up please.
