Your Portugese origin of marmalade is interesting. There are however a couple of other explanations. The first is down to Mary Queen of Scots, who was a rather sickly lady. Her ladies-in-waiting knew she like orange conserve which seemed to salve her migraines, vapours and sundry other illnesses. They refered to her liking for orange jam and its efficacious effect as a cure for MARIE MALADE(Mary's malady).The other possible origin is the one attributed to sailors, who suffered from scurvy. They used to eat orange and lime pickle, which seemed to lessen scurvy on long voyages at sea - oranges, lemons and limes could be kept for long periods without rotting like most other fruit. Their scurvy condition was referred to as MARE MALADE(sea sickness or mariners' sickness). Just thought you'd like to know of other possible origins of the word for marmalade.
