Isn't there a quote that an Englishman forgets his ancestors after three generations?Probably means what we do know is word of mouth. My wife has been doing our family history, both lines, and got back to at least all 16 great-grandparents.Research is continuing and she is gradually building up documentation, in at least duplicate, to hand on to our children. She has uncovered no shocks but one or two surprises for the last 200 years, one of my maternal ancestors was a railway engine driver (GWR - what else!). Just thought - he might have driven broad gauge, he was based in Hereford.A paternal ancestor was bailiff to the 4th Duke of Portland on his northern estate. Both sides were involved in transport, my wife's built ships, and the Brainsby's built coaches and steam-cars.They also caused a great conflagration in Peterborough when the coach works burnt down. I've wondered whether it was an insurance job!!Anyway, we're amassing piles of BMD certs, transcripts, newspaper photocopies, scans, and so on, for our children - not to be opened till they're 50 probably.
