£20 Now to Park at Sainsbury's West Ealing

You have to purchase £20 of goods now in the store in order to park there. If you stay only 20 minutes it's free. You could wait 3/4 minutes waiting for a lift and another 3/4 minutes waiting to pay.Soon there will be nowhere to park for nothing in West Ealing.Years ago LBE 'gave' the land on which a multi-story car park stood in Singapore Road to property developers/managers A2Dominion. More recently LBE 'gave' Dean Gardens Car Park to Henry Construction. The latter went bust with a half completed development covering the old car park.So I guess a vote for Labour on 7 May in West Ealing will be a vote for no car parking

My understanding is that Sainsbury's will be offering a shuttle bus service in future, which will also connect customers to other branches. So if there's no strawberry flavoured Cheesy Peas left in the West Ealing one, then hop aboard and be at the Chiswick branch in less than 120 minutes!That's what I've heard will be happening from somebody elsewhere on the forum.

Meanwhile, back on topic.It seems the changes to parking at Sainsbury’s was at the request of the store, mainly due to overwhelming use by patrons at the mosque and to a lesser extent St Mary’s church. The loss of free parking elsewhere in West Ealing will have contributed to increased use of the car park as well.It’s not unusual for supermarkets to have charges related to in-store purchases. The Chiswick Sainsbury’s had this for years until abandoning the policy completely a few years back.One wonders how Sainsbury’s West Ealing’s profits are faring with the competition from two revamped Lidl’s on its doorstep.

Try producing  fact for a change.Considering that all my neighbours who have bikes and use them also own cars, and use them, you might find you are barking up the wrong tree. It’s a common thing in Ealing for those who live in the real world.

We can spend 60 minutes asking riders riding past this very question. My guess is that the figure will be a lot nearer to mine than to yours. The loser buys the winner a coffee.

It’s good for a laugh for normal people, especially when you claim cyclists make better drivers since road awareness on a bike is obviously something plenty of your Lycra chums lack.The figure for drivers who cycle is from the government. It’s access to a car or can, not just holding a licence. I suspect you are one of them as you’ve never denied owning a car, which you must use when it suits you.Apparently cyclists are going to save the planet, apart from having their carbon fibre machines built in high polluting factories in China and then shipped round the world.

There’s no way you can take into consideration, a self assessed poll.My view is, all the cars I see down every road, driving on every road, majority of people want, need & like to drive.This might not be the case countrywide, but London, difficult to argue otherwise As for better drivers, cyclists are their own worst enemy.Unregulated, uncontrolled, oblivious to traffic regs & rules.Cycling without lights or helmet, their own foolhardy behaviour

I am interested because in my own 'research' I have used a similar figure but it is not for drivers but for people who own a licence. Are you quite sure that 83% of cyclists drive? Do you mean hold a licence? If so then that is line with my thinking. On the other hand if you mean regularly drive then I challenge you on that. My guess is that: 80% of adult cyclists have driving licences60 % of those 80% drive regularly 40% of those 60% own a carFor example, someone might regularly cycle to a car hire depot to pick up a rental car, or cycle to work and drive a company's vehicle or cycle to a car club bay and drive from there.Clearly, Simon, you don't cycle. If you did cycle you would know that you can tell the difference between a driver who cycles or knows you, just by their driving behaviour. Lastly, a study found that cyclists who drive are better drivers. The link between cycling and better driving was revealed which found that cyclist-drivers tend to have faster reaction times than non-cyclists.

Quite happy for cyclists to use., share roads, rather than take over.Motorists pay loads more for the privilege.Like DB , I Use both modes of transport when it suits.Just get on with it, don’t dictate & demand.Stupid schemes, closing roads causes problems & consequently more traffic in less available roads

That’s the best laugh I’ve had all week.Considering around 83 percent of cyclist are also drivers the likelihood is that some if those terrible drivers are your cycling brethren. Given the inability of most cyclists to obey even the simplest rules of the road by which they are bound it would be fair to say that it’s nailed on that those inconsiderate types display the same behaviour behind a wheel. Probably even Ben.

If drivers' attitudes towards ordinary people cycling locally, say to the shops, to friends houses, to the pub, to the football, to the tennis courts, to collect their fish and chips etc - i.e. not strenuous journeys - then cycling would become more enjoyable for everyone, safer for everyone and more people would do it.It cannot be repeated enough times that if more people cycled drivers would have quicker journeys, use less fuel, probably drive less aggressively (less cars = less overtaking), OUR roads would be safer, OUR  roads would not need to be repaired as often and air quality would improve. I would love to hear the argument against journey times not improving if there were less cars on the road. I cannot think of a single one but I invite you to argue your case why it is good for drivers if more people drove.If there is one quick fix that I would like to change is the one of the driver attitude thinking that someone on a bike should not be using the road in the first place! Add to that the unnecessary risk of a driver thinking that the person on a bike must concede the space to let the vehicle pass has to stop. I could go on but I will stop here.

Typical only half the story to meet your narrative. Proportionately higher degree of subsidy is paid towards freight transport on the roads delivering the essentials that we all need to survive. I don't see an M1 full of cargo bikes do you? Without road freight this country would collapse inside days.

The car park is not operated by Sainsbury's but by Euro Car Parks. If anything like Morrisons at Brentford (same operator)the staff are unable to issue vouchers or cancel any fine that may be pending as representation has to be made direct to the car park operator. I have two friends who both received parking charge notices and it was impossible for the store staff to cancel the charge.

Sorry it's £10 you need to spend - but don't try today as at 11:15 am today ALL the self checkout tills were out of order.No warning as you entered the car parks or the store. A queue of 30 people for the less than 5 items check out.Does Sainsbury's actually want to lose customers?

Now you are just being dishonest, Dominik.There was one American study published in 2012 that made that claim. There was another TfL one in 2018, which actually said it was people walking (not cycling since that’s a tiny minority) who spend a bit more in local shops. Why that’s a surprise is only a surprise to mouth-breathers on bikes. Quite a lot of those shoppers will own and drive a car for other purposes. It’s not rocket science.What’s never considered by people like Dominik is that passing trade often makes the difference for small retailers. Even town planners recognise this outside London where adequate parking is provided for free in many new neighbourhoods.
