Everyman Cinema, Brentford

For anyone who hasn’t been, I recommend the Everyman Cinema in Brentford.If you get the basic annual membership and are able to go on Mondays, it can work out at less than £8 a ticket for your first six films, if you take a friend. That is a pretty good deal for a luxury cinema.Also, it is properly dark, unlike quite a few cinemas nowadays.All in all, a welcome local addition. Try it!

The seats are nice and soft and have headrests, however I don't find them ergonomically well-designed. The headrest pushes your head down slightly, while the seat can recline. This makes it good if you're sitting in one particular row (just over half-way up). If you're too close or too far then it's really quite awkward.I wear glasses, so I'm probably more sensitive to my head position. Also, I had surgery on both knees 10 years ago, and for some reason when I get up after sitting for two hours at the Picturehouse, I can barely walk. I don't feel any pain during the film itself.My main complaint is the auditorium at the Picturehouse isn't dark enough. It's noticeable with films that rely on a lot of darkness and shadow (which happen to be films I like). I did contact them about this, but I think it must be a standard setting across all of their screens.Anyway, you can see I've given this a lot of consideration 😄

I take your point about the front rows at the Picturehouse which are much too close to the screen. I always sit up the back. Apart from that, I find the seats there very comfortable.

We did try eating a snack at one of these places with over-equipped luxury seats with folding tables and drinks holders, but found it predictably difficult to eat at all tidily in the dark!

I have to admit the idea of people eating meals in the cinema did put me off, but so far it hasn't happened. Just popcorn and the odd hot drink. Maybe I'm lucky, although I have been to quite a few screenings now. I'm definitely a traditionalist when it comes to cinemas being properly dark, so currently that is a selling point for me. Also the seats are much more comfortable than the Picturehouse for example. The seating there is ridiculous - has anyone been and managed to sit in the first 5 rows? I actually preferred the auditoriums at the Ealing Project (RIP).

I am terribly old school and go to the cinema to watch a film perhaps with some popcorn. I certainly wouldn't wish to share the auditorium with some selfish sod munching a meal would the associated smells and slurping and munching sounds. If you want to eat, go to a restaurant.

Another supporter of the 'no frills" approach. The combination of rows of seats set so far apart and the smell of cooked food being consumed by half the audience destroys the traditional cinema atmosphere of a shared experience.

I preferred Waterman's 'no frills' approach.You could also take a drink on with you,but no full meals like with Everyman.The adverts didn't go on for 25 or 30 mins either.

It must be struggling to attract enough clientele to make it viable. There’s a very similar post to this on Brentford site posted around the same time.I wonder if the business model doesn’t really appeal to those Brentford residents who might prefer genuine value for money?
