Fenced off section on Haven Green

Does anyone know what on earth the fenced off space on the southern side near the bus stops is about? It contains some green plants and I have seen a traffic cone plus a small plastic trestle used to keep the public away from works.I thought it could be a site of public interest or maybe a nuclear shelter used by the big brains at the council, obviously very small and below ground. Any ideas?

A good question (I've often wondered the same as I walked past) and a good response; thank you both.Someone locally must be able to throw some more light on the story here, remembering what they saw as a child perhaps, or what a parent has told them. If the Council, or Ealing Civic Society, or some other local body could put up a notice board asking it just might elicit some useful information.

Around 4 years ago workers on the green found an aging manhole cover over a 30 foot deep white tiled shaft that descended to a horizontal tunnel leading in one direction to the station and the other to Gordon Road. Steps to the tunnel were degraded and are unsafe to use. Having looked into it (ha ha) the Council found no records of the shaft's construction and the MoD couldn't help. There's been speculation that it could be linked somehow to a WW2 air raid shelter north of the diagonal road across the Green or perhaps early works to extend the District Line to Uxbridge which were subsequently abandoned. But that's only speculation.Council Parks officers have fenced off the hole since discovering it to safeguard the public. Working with limited budgets, they are I think trying to figure out what best to do with it.
