Maxim's Chinese restaurant

I was wondering if anyone had experience of this restaurant in Northfields and if it's any good.

Biriani Junction The Mall,avoid.Paper plates, plastic cutlery. Ask you to put it in bin ie clear up when finished. Food lukewarm.Won't be there in 12 months' time.

Well, I went to Maxim's last night and very nice it was too. Monday's is not the best time to go as it was far from full but the food was excellent, as good as it always is.

Some may remember Maxime's Wine Barnear Boston Manor Station.Sadly,in many ways,Wine Bars are just a memory.

I remember the Slow Boat very well almost opposite the top of Chapel Road on Uxbridge Road. The food there was fantastic, the pancake rolls were so large that they were a meal in themselves, It was the first time when actually tasted that much chilli in a Kung-po chicken and my first experience of crispy duck. Lovely people although I clearly remember all hell breaking loose when a diner tried to do a runner and two chefs appeared from the kitchen brandishing meat cleavers.

We've been there as a special treat and its always been good. Was better in the 90s but then the other place about 6 doors down was outstanding.But best memories and the first place we as a family ever dined out for a Chinese/Cantonese meal was a lovely place called the  'Slow Boat'  in Uxbridge road somewhere on the opposite side to Daniels Store and the Fire Station.The welcome from the owners and the way we as Kids were invited to try things and the welcome back the next time by such a lovely staff is still memorable as was the food.  It must have been early 1970s and when my brother passed his 11-Plus. Think that was the reason for going.

It looks as though you caught them at a bad time although I have never experienced this. Maxim's has been going for about 50 years or more and originally it was a single premises before they made it as it is now.

Lara we are an extremely social and friendly couple who love getting to know people and interacting with service staff, I used to be a waitress myself so know how refreshing it is to interact with the clients. Sadly our experience at Maxim's had nothing to do with giving off a vibe that we didn't want attention, the staff were rude and non courteous from the moment we arrived. They made us feel like they did not want us there and when I complained about the seriously under cooked chicken they got even worse, they refused to replace my dish and I had to insist that they take the cost of the dish off the bill. There is no excuse for bad service in a restaurant, you should not be in the service industry if you don't enjoy serving!

Having experienced the surly and indifferent service at Maxim's we now travel to a fantastic family run Chinese restaurant near Chalfont St Peter. Where the bills are lower the food better and the service is delivered by a matriarchal team who treat you like old friends visiting. Not going to mention the name because the last thing I want is for it to become too popular.  It's busy enough already.

Maxims is fantastic - highly recommend trying it out; Beautiful interior, the food it authentic and also freshly prepared, which means it's better to go in than get a take away for sure. It's not cheap, but quality often isn't. The staff are also wonderful and have a very family vibe if you like that, but they also won't bother a group who just want a quiet intimate meal. I'm really sorry to hear some people receive poor service; I would wonder what exactly happened in those experiences - perhaps those customers gave off a vibe that they don't want a lot of attention at the table?

Went to Maxim's once, received extremely bad and rude service, raw chicken and a bill of over £100 no thank you!

The other thing not to ask is whether or not they serve donkey. Apparently asking for sweet and sour Wong Kei donkey is frowned upon.

If you go to Wong Kei please don't do the joke about "are you named after your dodgy table legs".They've heard it a thousand times and will make your special fried rice "extra special" if you say it again.Apparently

Some friends went back to Wong Kei just before Christmas for the first time in ages. They were greeted with "what you again? I told you before get out!" and a friendly smile 😊 The food was, apparently great

If you wanted proper ‘impersonal service’ you should have tried Wong Kei in Chinatown back in the day. Customers were shouted at and made to feel as welcome as a fly in your stir fry. People loved it and it thrives.

Thanks for the responses. Online reviews also mention poor service. I'm attracted by the ease of parking there at night.

I've been going to Maxim's for more years than I can remember! It's a first class restaurant and my son and daughter went a couple of weeks ago for a meal. The North China Inn is also good but I still prefer Maxim's.

I haven't been there for a couple of years but the food was excellent albeit rather expensive The service however ranged from attentive to totally indifferent and actually quite surly at times. Perhaps it was an off night but that's not my problem.  The North China in Acton also receives rave reviews from those who use it.
