Just Stop Oil Have Won

What a fantastic campaign from JSO, huge congratulations to all local members. I remember the early campaigns and meetings in the Forrester. I hope this gives local campaigners the love and energy they deserve to fight for clean air, safe streets, carbon responsibility and biodiversity.  I hope the Nigels and the Simons have the guts to allow me to stay on the forum and debate these issues.

Apparently no more fossil fuels permits or something .Also coupled  with the fact that the majority of sensible people were sick of their ridiculous actions - criminal damage

Sorry to interrupt but what has JSO actually won, I am somewhat confused, I thought that they had finally realised that damaging property, stopping traffic and gluing themselves to things wasn't actually working????

It is some time ago but I studied the question of how influential the Suffragette movement was and it is very had to make a case that direct action was important in the decision to grant women the vote.We tend to celebrate the more headline grabbing of the suffragettes but it is likely that the patient but dull letter writing and lobbying of the suffragists was more important in moving the cause forward. This was the approach that worked so well in other countries that implemented votes for women far earlier than the UK.I'm sure that headline grabbing actions caused some to reconsider views opposed to votes for women but they will have also resulted in some hardening their opinions or abandoning previous support. We will never know how this balanced out but it is a safe assumption that suffragist efforts slowly garnered support for their cause.Ultimately it was the war that led to the very limited increase in the franchise. The contribution of women to the war effort was important but one of the key arguments against women voting, that the man represented the views of a household and his family could influence him, was undermined by there being so many households without men due to the carnage.Having read the correspondence of both suffragettes and suffragists, I formed the impression that the former were often narcissists who didn't have the attention span for a long campaign whereas the suffragists were determined and committed women who recognised that their goals could be achieved but it would take time and patience.Perhaps there is room for both types of campaign on any issues but in my view the real heroes of the votes for women campaign were the thousands of unnamed individuals who for decades sought to change the minds of those in positions of authority with the power of reasoned argument.

Yep, phones largely made from plastics, made from oil which ecomentalist dinosaurs want to 'stop'. If we listened to all of the rubbish peddled by them we would still be banging rocks together wondering who the people were in the orange (oil based) plastic high viz tops.

Ask any woman if she is grateful to the suffragists or the suffragettes to have their basic right to vote and I know where I will put my money on. Emily Davison died so that women in this country could vote. She adopted direct action, because decades of soft petitions was just futile for her. Was she, the Pankhursts and their entire movement any different from today's JSO activists?

Yes, throwing orange powder paint over a snooker table, defacing works of art and the well publicised prevention if a mother trying to get to hospital were particular 'high' points in the JSO campaigning.

Well, better get on to your MP about that and perhaps get an equivocal answer from LBE about whether they support it or not. Mason was in favour before but very quiet now. Hounslow passed a motion on Tuesday opposing expansion.I’m well aware of the complexities of these things, going back to when I did my degree. Probably more aware of it than you would wish to believe. As for the UK leading the way on tackling climate change? Laughable, particularly when Ed Miliband is steering policy. Maybe a bold move like banning all non-essential flights is what’s needed. Will upset the holiday crowds and weekend getaway types but that would actually make a difference.

I kind of love you Simon, and I am definitely up for your pushback. All of these issues are more complex than they appear. I am currently 100% against Heathrow expansion.

Well, it’s a Pyrrhic victory for them considering oil and gas will still be extracted for decades to come in the UK.What you seem to overlook Charlotte is the global picture, where extraction is actually increasing.You also neglect to address the elephant in the room of Heathrow expansion, which will see thousands more tonnes of nasties dumped over London. But it’s government policy so that’s okay. Some of your chums probably enjoy those flights. Do you harangue them or just keep that to social media?If you want to post on here you will have to expect pushback if it’s nonsense.
