Bit of a plea

If you have elderly friends or neighbours, please give them a knock or a phone call to make sure that they are OK during this cold snap. Too many elderly people suffer in silence or hold hard to their pride and won't ask for help (bit of shopping etc). We are, above all, a community and we always step up to the mark. Thanks one and all.

Incidentally, I asked those in the Northern part of the parish whether they were aware of the community activities of our 'favourite' velophile. The universal reaction was "who?"

I actually didn't do anything via Crisis Philippa as there are far more cost effective ways of supporting those in need. In collaboration with other churches we supported the eating churches winter night shelter and ensured that those who stayed with us as guests were fed, had a chance to get off the streets for a few nights and went away with packs of warm clothing and essential personal care supplies.  Special mention to Peerless Windows who made a generous donation and to all those who helped bring comfort to those less fortunate than themselves by cooking meals being 'night stewards' and to the companies that gave me really good discounts on warm clothing toothpaste, shaving foam etc.

It's a good idea Nigel.  I missed your Crisis at Christmas appeal as I think all the extra help that is given by them as well as the Christmas meal is a brilliant idea.  So much easier when there is an organisation that knows where to find answers than having to search out separate solutions for particular challenges eg dentistry.The changes in buying electricity and gas etc has become so much more difficult with all these different companies - many of whom are difficult to talk to and make it more complicated to pay and all the electronic systems for paying instead of banks has made it more complicated for a lot of people.If people have a problem then they do need to talk to their gas and electric companies - and not just suffer in silence.  Many may need to be registered on the utility companies' priority registers.https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/how-to-get-help-if-you-re-struggling-with-your-energy-bills-/
