If Sadiq Khan actually does get Knighted, it shows everything rotten about the Honours system.

He's done nothing but posture, grandstand and oversee the decline of London, especially knife crime, which has soared on his watch.He deserves firing, not giving him a Knighthood, which is farcical and proves you can be a gross incompetent and fail upwards.Like SO many things in Britain today the system is broken, and twits like him still get rewarded.I despair.(Shakes head and goes to bed early)    😊

Forget ULEZ how about his failures to control knife crime, the totally missed targets on new housing starts, the culpable overspend on TfL budgets and the fact thata he is totally incapable of negotiating a settlement with the unions preferring simply to roll over every time they confront him The man is an abject failure as a mayor as were his predecessors

Our pollution levels are not dreadful, they have fallen massively since the 1970s and there are only a few known pollution hotspots that breach EU thresholds. Even the modelling that Khan commissioned forecast that ULEZ expansion would results in a tiny (eg 1-2%) reduction in pollution levels.

Not everyone thinks that he is such a great failure.  He has put into place the uncomfortable and unpopular ULEZ which the previous mayor Boris Johnson announced and then ran away from carrying out.Our air pollution (and emissions) were dreadful in the UK and the Govt had been taken to court and lost several times over it.  It must have been pretty uncomfortable for the Tory govt to be told by the High Court (twice at least) that the efforts of the Govt were not good enough and that they had to do better.There are always some people who are likely to be critical of the methods used - as there are for any changes to anybody's routine.We should all be reminded that the oil and gas companies knew 50 years ago that there was a problem with the burning of fossil fuels and the delaying of action taken and the need for innovation and change has been very detrimental to us all.

The honours system seems now to go to people for merely doing their job for which they have invariably been well remunerated. On that basis we should all get honoured. Really, if we have them honours should go to perhaps volunteers who have given of their time & attention to others less fortunate.It’s reached the point now where the real honours go to those who turn them down.  Albert Finney was one such- he was offered a knighthood twice and turned it down twice.Ken Livingstone also. Offered an CBE ( or OBE not sure which) turned an honour down on the basis that he was well paid for a job he enjoyed & that was enough for him. Not often I put a good word in for Ken but there we are.

This was despite his spunking £6million on Overground and rebranding and £24m (!) on a Friday fare freeze that failed to entice anyone into Town.Then he accepts far less from Labour this year along with a direct order to put fares up. He’s not even competent enough to get no strike clauses put in the very generous pay awards he’s given tube drivers.Khan is notoriously vain and exceedingly thin skinned when it comes to criticism. His performances at mayor questions is farcical. Never answers anything difficult. If he’s in charge, then the buck stops with him for any failures in London governance.

Johnson was a joke as mayor, and so is Khan. The position should be abolished as it’s made London into a fiefdom for narcissistic princelings. There’s plenty of cash swilling around TfL and other areas of the mayor’s remit. It’s how it’s spent that’s the problem, whether that’s a garden bridge or £24m on a failed Friday fare freeze under this mayor.I know what democracy is thank you. We have a very lopsided version in this country, where a party can get a massive majority with a minority of the vote.

as for crime you need to ask about who decided to defund the metropolitan police and remember that the ULEZ was the price had had to pay to get TFL funding during Covid. Both Conservative decisions. I personally feel that he could have been more creative in the housing area. The people voted for him like we did for Johnson before him. Its called democracy.

All sorts of glory hunters and their ilk go scheming to get themselves OBEs and citations.  It's been abused to a degree that those who really do spend their lives or their resources doing real good and campaigning and really making a difference get obscured by those who schemes and use others to get a nomination.People keen to create Charities and who suddenly impose on others projects often have this motive.Then there's the political lot.It all really does need to be overhauled. Keep the honours by all means but rid the selections from abuse and glory seekers.
