I was in Trafalgar Square this Sunday after cheering on a friend who was running in the Marathon and went past the St. George's Day celebration. It was an utter embarassment with hardly anyone in attendance despite central London being unusually crowded. The event is only being put on after whining from right wing fringe groups about the Mayor supporting St. Patrick's Day parades. I'm patriotic but St George's Day has never been a big deal either for me or generally in English culture. Attempts to try and manufacturing it into something it is not should be abandoned to save us all some money.
