Camera ‘enforcement’ is the preferred mode of policing now, though London should be the safest city in the world given the number of cctv cameras littering the streets. But of course there are very small minded individuals who think the biggest crime of all is to use a motor vehicle. What the experts fail to understand is that cctv is no deterrent to hardened criminals. They simply don’t care. The chances of being caught, convicted and incarcerated are slim, and even if that does happen it doesn’t change habits. I worked at a criminal law firm for a while and there were plenty of regular customers for whom crime was a lifestyle choice rather than a necessity. Many were proud of their convictions.I also worked for the police for a while and the mentality there mainly revolves around pensions, annual leave and retirement dates. Catching the bad guys came a long way down the list, especially if it interfered with scheduled meal breaks!A lot of this is down to poor leadership at national and local level, within the police and certainly politically.
