Yep, doesn't seem a sane commercial decision does it?

Licence To Shoplift, yet more incentive and encouragement for the slow and inexorable degradation of Law & Order.Exactly. Member of staff...£12hr? Bet they lose at least that with self checkout!

It’s actually a cost cutting exercise that benefits nobody. Customers dislike it because if a problem occurs there’s usually a wait for a staff member to sort it out. Employees don’t like it because it means somebody losing their job.Tesco tried this at the Osterley store and had to return to manned tills. It may be that Sainsbury’s have an eye on the development potential in West Ealing, although that depends on whether it owns the freehold of the site.

Perhaps they are actually trying to close that branch? If their customers stop shopping there they will have an excuse to.I wondered that about Boots in the Broadway Centre. It is happening all over and so many working at those jobs will be part-timers with caring responsibilities of one sort or another.

We only noticed once we had been round the whole shop. They've left one till, but it was abandoned.Whole family will now shop elsewhere.
