Wyke Gardens which was for decades a small street of prefabricated houses was built next to quite a large complex of underground tunnels and shelters but the purpose of these tunnels and their extent is lost in the mists of time. As children we used to play football around the huge slabs covering the entrances. You could drop a pebble through the gaps in the slabs and it seemed a long time, at least to a small boy, before you heard it hit the bottom
