Products made of complex materials can now be taken to Greenford

There's a brilliant quote here - Councillor Deirdre Costigan, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for climate action said, “Ealing is one of the top performing boroughs in London for recycling household waste. But we want to achieve even more so we are making it easier for residents to recycle''. So desperate to see us as one of the top performing boroughs that they closed one of two centres we had eh? Phillipa, of course, is welcome to use the bins at any time.The more people who use them, then the more we raise for charity.Hopefully, we can get back to recycling the full range of complex products in due course.

Just fancy that!They should invite Philippa to officially open the bins!What would be useful would be more such facilities easily accessible to everyone. Of course, the wisdom of the council dictates that recycling facilities on the street encourage fly tipping so they remove them.

By way of update and amazing what a bit of bad publicity gets you on Panorama. From next Monday St Thomas' will be recycling Pringles tubes and bread bags in the reopened Terracycle bins outside the church hall. No need to book, no need to travel to Greenford and open 24/7/ 365. Thanks to Pauline and her team of volunteers who never wanted to withdraw from the scheme in the first place but who were asked to do so by Terracycle.

Should have added that Terracycle claimed that the 'volunteers' closed the church recycling site and that they can re-open if they wish.On the first part - untrue as we received notice of their withdrawl; on the second prt - well, thats's news to us, amazing what exposure on Panorama does to 'wake up' some companies. We are now looking at reopening based on their statement.

Our drop off at St Thomas's was outside the church hall so publicly accessible 24/7/ 365.Terracycle used to collect once a month. It's a shame as it was a good source of income for the charities supported.

The programme featured a family from west London trying to use the advertised sites, one of which was the church. It was closed as a drop off point so they ended up going all round the houses. Not really what they wanted to do and they made the point that it wasn’t going to be a regular thing for them.Surely the council could provide recycling points closer to people’s homes, or include it in the bi-weekly collection? The money must be there, after all they’ve just voted themselves massive allowance increases!

Our local church St. Thomas's on Boston Road was one of a number of Teracycle drop off points for a number of years and we raised over £5,000 for charity. Teracycle withdrew the local schemes gradually ending it totally a couple of months ago leaving Greenford depot as a central drop-off location. Charities miss out and people will not travel to Greenford just to recycle baby food packets, crisp wrappers Pringles tubes etc

Interesting Panorama programme tonight about just how effective Terracycle is in recycling. One of the points made was just how far one has to travel to drop off materials.I wonder if Cllr Costigan was watching...

In effect all the voters have done is hand over Ealing to the GLA and the Mayor of London as they are simply subservient to his policies without question.One wonders who the lemmings really are? The voters or the Local administration ?

Reading the article again I don’t see how the scheme will do much to increase recycling rates. Nobody is going to make a special trip to Greenford to take a bag of this waste, and just think of the carbon footprint of all those vehicles doing so!Perhaps our resident eco-warrior and recycling guru Philippa Bond could do a weekly collection on her bike and drop them off for us?I suspect this will be another much heralded green schemes that gets quietly dropped in six months. Rather like the litter picking in the parks.

It’s nothing new. Mik Sabiers was Bell’s fall guy for the LTN fiasco, and wasn’t bright enough to realise. Julian actually called all the shots and made all the decisions. The cabinet puts up with it because they like the perks of office.You will have noticed that Mason was an enthusiastic supporter of Bell until ambition got the better of him. Others, like Mahfouz, kept a low profile and have been rewarded with posts under Mason.This will not be a consensus council. It will be Mason+. He’s got his eyes on Rupa Huq’s seat in 2024 (little love lost there I understand). If he does get promoted to the Big House then we’re stuck with Deirdre.....

I've noticed reading back, that all of Cllr. Costigan's 'press' statements are almost word for word statements put out by other sources and merely altered to localise.Probably not her words at all but those of a junior press officer who has lifted everything from policy and GLA pre prepared statements, issued to all Labour London administrations.She clearly only listens to like minded and does not really look deeper for herself and find things out for herself. Sadly very few do. But given the nice earner cabinet members now rake in, very much ought to be.So far she seems to be a Sheep following the Shepherd and not really got a proper grasp of the whole picture.Not that there are very many clear and pragmatic and truly innovative thinkers in LBE - elected or directorate. So she's just one of the many sheep.

Deirdre isn’t blessed in the intellectual department, but she ticks a lot of boxes for the on-message left.The irony of selling off Acton recycling centre is that they’ve built a storage facility in the site, to which people will regularly drive.Of course, being so hard up the council had no option but to sell off this asset. They need to fund those big increases in allowances somehow.

I think that is right. I had no idea that things like toothbrushes and Pringles cartons couldn't be recycled. The Stirling Road tip was handy because we could fit a visit into other trips such as going to the park or the shops but Greenford is just too far away for it to be justifiable to collect these composite products and take them there.I've asked on this forum before about whether it is best to err on the side of caution when putting things in the blue bin or just throw stuff in an hope but never got a definitive answer.

My instinct tells me that 'anything' plastic or cellophane gets chucked into folks' blue wheelie bin, in the hope that it gets 'sorted' at a destination recycling facility (aka shipped off to the west coast of Africa, where it is burnt).
