Weren't they £1.00 just a few years back ?

It was far less about funding.It just had the goodwill and the access with very little to do with money and funding.Like so many other things which have been killed off once someone dreams up 'guidelines and creates charges, next thing there are jobs created with people being paid salaries for the work volunteers and those passionate about their interests did for nothing..in in the main still end up doing to avoid a disaster.

True, but the more 'relaxed' organisation of the early days, when it was free, did notneed very much of a subsidy at all.

There's inflation but there is also the substantial cut to council budgets since 2010, which means that festivals receive far less funding in support.

The allure has certainly gone. It was so much better when it was a casual festival. One could drift in an out throughout the day pop out for lunch or supper and still have a great time. It was far more relaxed. Appreciate that COVID has had an impact but it was far more 'regimented' even before the pandemic.

Both have lost there allure.  It all became too controlled and the ad hoc feel as well as the impromptu and low cost aspect was so good yet the quality of the acts really top.It used to feel local for locals.  Still is but it's somehow not so with the way it's marketed.

Inflation from 2008 to 2022 was just under 37% according to the government's website, so your 2008 £18.00 ticket would now be c. £24.60

Interesting prices. I just checked on a very old email - when I went to the gala comedy night at the Ealing Comedy Festival in July 2008, it cost £16.40 per ticket plus an annoying transaction fee of £1.60Inflation-wise, is that about the same as this year's near £32?

They were free and then a nominal £1.00. The 'comedy' festival tickets to sit on a folding chair in a tent are just shy of £32.00
