On the Common itself, No. In the general area known as “Ealing Common“, yes. A bomb destroyed one of the houses in Hale Gardens. They were rebuilt in a style quite different from the existing range. The blast was so strong it damaged the ceiling of the dining room in 328 Uxbridge Road. I was given this information by a former owner of 328 whose family had lived in the property since it was built. In fact, one of his forebears had built the houses in the neighbourhood. 328 was once the best preserved of all houses on the row between Birch Grove and Hale Gardens, not only the building, but even the tessellated paths in the front garden had survived in their original character. Most in the row have since given way to the tide of tarmac in this “Conservation Area”.
