The problem with ‘news’ reporting now is that it’s not simply saying x, y or z has happened. It’s all conjecture and empty comment, because the news channels simply have to fill the hours of broadcast time. The best option is just to not watch it, particularly since a certain tranche of reporters fail to recognise the difference between reporting a fact and offering their opinion.Years ago I remember reading an article that said that whatever happens in America will find its way here in due course. Judging by the vapid nonsense that passes for news these days that seems true with the media. The BBC hit its nadir with the Cliff Richard case, showing live pictures of a raid on the singer’s home. Very American that. Of course, it breached standards and cost the Beeb (or rather, us) a fair few quid.This petrol crisis will all be forgotten in a few weeks, especially when there’s a pumpkin shortage for Halloween and then no turkey for Christmas!
