The government's recent change of emphasis is intentional. 'Stay at home' was a clear instruction from above, which most people followed. 'Stay Alert' seems vague and meaningless, but purposely puts the responsibility on the individual. If you catch something, it's your fault for not being 'alert' enough. I thought government scientists were trying to 'control the virus', but the new slogan expects us to do it, so it'll be our fault again. The lower paid and most precarious are now expected to go to potentially unsafe workplaces, with social distancing in place only 'if possible', using dangerous public transport, and with no childcare in place as schools are yet to open, witth financial support for staying at home being phased out. And if your working conditions are unsatisfactory, Johnson suggests 'talking to your employer', rather than relying on the Health and Safety at Work Act. So it's now our responsibility to ensure our own safety going to work. Of course we want the economy to be up and running and to meet friends and family again, but for that to happen the government needs to provide a safe environment for us - and they're nowhere near doing that. So rather than Johnson's exhortations to 'use your common sense', I suggest - KEEP US SAFE, SAVE OUR LIVES, MAKE BRITAIN BETTER.
