VE day

I always have wondered why we never got a public holiday. This year our public holiday was just a swap with another. Most other countries do get a bank holiday. What puzzled me was that Germany did not get one. However I learn today that Germany is finally getting one.

When I worked in Holland we worked a 40 hour week even though it was 37.5 as a contract. The extra hours were added together and so they covered the bridging days. Having a summer with several 4 day weekends allowed me to enjoy a lot of days out.

Yes indeed, in countries like Germany and France, many companies allow or even encourage employees to take off a Friday if Thursday is a public holiday - and the same goes for Monday being a bridging day if Tuesday is a public holiday. But whilst you can take it as a holiday, its no extra day's holiday since it counts against your annual leave or overtime hours. And of course if a fixed date public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday in Germany, bad luck - no day off on Monday as recompense!

Watching TV today. Its Ascension day so most of Europe is on a public hol. In France as the holiday falls on a Thursday Friday is considered a bridgeing day so that is a holiday as well. Funny thing is France is not a religious country. We are as the Queen is head of the church but we dont get it off.

Strange that Germany can afford one. Next year when all our new trade deals kick in and our very special deal from Mr Trump starts things will be better.

I think you are all very well aware that there will be no new expensive Bank Holidays, which equate to a National One Day Loss Of Production.It is so obviously unafordable, this virus has cost the planet dearly and we'll be paying it off for quite some time. Austerity? You ain't seen nuthin' yet.

I think we should have an extra holiday. Also a holiday to go to the cemetary and put flowers on the grave of relativrs if we wish. Also a holiday for 1st world war commeration.

Maybe we should make the swap permanent. With two bank holidays in May coming hard on the heels of Easter, the last thing we need is an *extra* bank holiday at this time of year.
