When will this idiot leader realise that the moist vulnerable are not online

Reading the patronising glib stuff from the Council leader makes me squirm.Just how out of reality is he and his advisors?Does he still not realise just how many people are not online and holed up indoors with no contact?How many housebound are not even qualify for any sort of help and falling through the much hailed safe net?He need to get off his smart...fone and get out and find out why Ealing Hospital is being relieved of its emergency infrastructure, why so many over 80s cannot =get supplies or and local help and why local volunteers doing what they can are getting parking tickets for doing the right thing.Then he might get past the propaganda and have something  of substance to write about. He can make a difference by being a little more in touch with reality rather than regurgitation press releases.

One day when our home wifi went down I wondered if I could somehow use my iPhone to make an outward connection, and so it proved by using Bluetooth 'tethering'. The settings to do this were pretty self-evident.

Donna. Go to settings click on connections. You will see hot spot click on this and you will get a name and password. On your computer go to wifi and you will see your phone name click on that and put in the password. Also tethering. You need a cable with a standard usb one end and a plug for your phone where you charge it. Plug in and somewhere on your computer it will say connected by cable. When tethering you phone will  charge as you work.

It does depend on the phone.
There are very clear instructions if you Google.
They are really simple, as an example, on an iPhone go to Settings>Personal Hotspot and turn it on. job done.

That is right data has never been cheaper on a mobile. Also I was surprised that on my phone using the hot spot I can connect up to 6 devices. Incredible really.

It really isn't that difficult, I could explain to even the most technophobic person the simple process for downloading an app in under two minutes.
As to ongoing costs, 92% of UK households already have internet access, for those that don't, data on a mobile phone has never been cheaper.

Yes Philippa trickle down,well I read about it at the begining and could see it was just another myth. Bit like public private partnership. We couuuld put 10p a litre on fuel for the NHS. I was reading that some time ago a party it northern Europe was looking for something to win the election. Increase tax! It was a vote winner. A proper social state. Full dental care, you have proper education so you dont have to send you children to private schools. No waiting lists etc.

Hearing this morning that the Govt will be giving tablets and computers to children so that they can learn at home.  No mention though of the internet.  It is continuous payments for that that many feel they can't afford.

Yes just because people have phones or ipads does not mean that they can do online banking or online shopping.  We tried to explain to FIL what the worldwide web was.  He grew up in a world where they used to run out to see which of about two brands of car was coming when they heard one.  No they didn't really live in the sticks it was just that there were not so many cars around.  Just a few people had them. There is no way that he could have dealt with the situation now.  We used to go on a 2 hr drive every weekend to replenish the fridge and cupboards so that carers could make something simple for him to eat every night. Hot lunches were delivered. He was nearly 100 when he died.

Yes, 10 years of running down the NHS and cutting the amount that Councils have to pay for social care.  All governments have failed to deal with the problem of social care because they are so worried to lose votes by putting up tax.  Tax should be graduated - and that means going all the way up and including the highest earners.  Trickle down is a myth.

Raymond, I agree with you.
It was purely 'by accident' that we found a delivery slot from Morrisons as they are the only supermarket that stocks the very low sugar orange juice that my son can drink post-operatively and I was just checking if they still stocked it.
I find it incredible that all of the slots are being taken by the 'vulnerable'.

Find it disturbing that so many getting delivery slots and getting panicky over the waits for slots are young fit and able people living a short walk from a supermarket, whilst those who cannot get out at all or not online or app savvy are going without or simply reliant on goodwill from family or neighbours.Maybe a restriction should be placed on under 60s and proximity to shops.

We have been shopping both for friends and our daughter (who has been isolating after a child at her school had a parent who tested positive). Mostly it has been a pleasant experience after the initial panic buying dropped-off (they probably still have 90% of the toilet roll that they stockpiled) with friendly chatting in the queues. We did manage to get one delivery (sadly, using two sticks to walk means that there is only so much standing in queues I can handle) and our one substitution was a bottle of vinegar that was changed for a different type. if that's the worst that happens I will be delighted.

There is also another sort of person I have found. I admitt it must be a small group though. They have wifi and perphaps an I pad. The can send an e mail and thats it. I know someone in this position and they cannot get an online shopping slot. Did not know what wifi was. I ordered shopping for them which worked for me as I got over the £60 minimum more easily. However a few surprises. I ordered 4 tinned fish items but only allowed three. Still they were happy. They think I am  a computer expert but as people on this site probably know from my questions I certainly am not. Another query if you order for someone is why are you putting in another order when the last order has not arrived. Also I tell them the order has gone in and the price but not pay me until it arrives because the price could change because of substitutions. Then follows what are substitutions?

If you are offering to leave me out of your constant 'Tory cuts' bleating (including your latest diatribe where you indirectly blame 'Tory politicians' for the deaths in care homes***) - I would absolutely delighted.
***Most of which have been sold by the Middle Eastern/ Asian founders who built care home empires to hedge funds or American owners.

I have never understood the mindset of some Labour supporters who cannot see beyond the mantra of their last (failed) manifesto — or, more probably, some Utopian or idealistic view of Socialism from the 1950's.
Sometimes, as was proved by the 'guaranteed Labour victory' at the December 2019 election some people need to accept what is reality rather than fantasy.
What next? Blaming 'Tory cuts' for the Chinese consuming pangolins from 'wet markets' and kicking off Covid-19?
