Today's The Sunday Times - Best Places to Live 2020

Within the London regional section, Victoria Park Village was the winner with Ealing one of 5 runners up along with Bermondsey, Highbury, Muswell Hill and Notting Hill.And the summary for Ealing  "Why we love it : Calming, charming and better connected than Chiswick."Cowardly I know but I will leave it to someone else to post this news on the ChiswickW4 website.

The height is useful. I lived in the borough for 41 years and my last 22 in Hanwell which had wonderful parks. A year ago I moved to Lancing in West Sussex and love it here. Though sea level could be a problem at some point. But thanks to Corona virus my garden will be my paradise

This was the clincher for me:-Chiswick will all be under water when The Thames Barrier fails.And it WILL fail, sooner or later.I am c32 feet above current sea level.

If you live in Ealing, you can virtually work anywhere, including Reading, Oxford etc.In Chiswick, you're stuck as it's just not a very good place to get to and from ,unless you happen to work on the district line.We have Central, district, main line, Piccadilly, before you even talk about Crossrail.

Remember going to the Bill Bailey gig in Walpole Park a few years ago and he opened with "Ah Ealing, good to be back, not as posh as Chiswick of course, but nowhere near as shit as Acton".

As we all know, regardless of its inadequacies, Chiswick simply has "cachet", whereas Ealing does not, as much.Acton of course has virtually none.  😁

Have to say that the Sunday Times article is wildly inaccurate in some areas.
We regularly visit Cardigan and it lists Fishguard as the nearest station 'twenty minutes away'. Yes if you have a Harrier Jump Jet!
Cardigan is a great place, just don't get ill as it's an hour to the nearest A&E.

Apart from ego or general snobby-ness why would you choose Chiswick ahead of Ealing? It only has the district line and isn't getting Crossrail. It's high street is much better, granted, but only for a bout 250 yards and then it's not great. Parking's a nightmare ,too, even on a Sunday.

As the article pointed out, we have lots of green spaces and excellent transport links.

I used to work in Islington and even the nice areas around Canonbury are rubbish compared to most of Ealing.

Methinks The Sunday Times staff writers have been ingesting exotic substances, I certainly wouldn't want to live in a few of those places.  😨
