Yet more roadworks in South Ealing

Signs have gone up saying that there will be gas works down Ealing Rd from January 2nd for TWENTY WEEKS. I am sick to death of it.

There was indeed a gas works (North Thames Gas Board formerly the Gas Light and Coke Company) occupying both the Waterman's site with the gas holders on the opposite side of the road.My grandfather got a job there on his return from WW1 and stayed there as a Senior Inspector until he retired in the late 1950's.The original gasworks opened on the site in 1821!

Local historians will know better than me, but there was a gas works just down by the river, so could the old pipes they're digging out of South Ealing Road be the original ones laid down to supply gas to Ealing in 1846? If so, they should keep a chunk to put in a local museum.

It was constantly leaking!  Hopefully once this has been done it won't be dug up so often and we won't have to endure the smell and worry about the gas leaking!

Just the latest phase in the planned replacement of the cast iron gas main. This will go on until next summer in phases.Having seen a 'lump' of the old rusted-through main that was removed I am amazed that there were not more leaks.Hopefully, the replacement will avoid the need to dig up the road every couple of weeks to repair yet another leak.
