Uber - 'Not Fit and Proper'

Will be interested to see further explanation of this but, at first glance, this looks like a politically motivated decision. The Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association is quite a powerful lobbying group.My firm view is that the existence of Uber makes London a safer place. Most fathers of teenage girld will tell you that it was a comfort to know that she was a few clicks away from a ride home which was statistically far safer than the alternatives.The last time I chatted to a driver about this he said that he would just end up working for another equivalent ride service but his terms would be worse so I can't see who is benefiting from this other than black cab drivers who charge rates which are now prohibitive for most Londoners.

The obvious flaw in TfL's argument about Uber not being secure because sometimes drivers will amend the picture to allow someone else to use the vehicle is that 'sub-letting' of black cabs is widespread and there are fewer restrictions to stop it happening.

My niece always makes a big show of taking a picture of the car and number plate before getting into a cab of any form.it's a shame that she feels she has to do this, but the deterrent effect is surely clear?

One of the reasons was that drivers are still faking details. It may be a small group but still a dangerous group

Luckily for us other options exist: Addison Lee (a safe option when transporting unaccompanied children), minicab firms and now Kapten. Public transport and bikes aren't too bad either.
