Labour Win in Ealing

The Labour vote held up in Ealing (and Hounslow) because of the significant proportion of support they get from the Asian communities. These tend to be loyal and are generally less exercised by Brexit - in many cases they are actually keen to leave the EU because they recognise that trade deals with their origin countries will also mean easier access to visas.Labour in the borough is really a coalition of a lot of interests which makes for consensus leadership and moderate policy making. Julian Bell has been good at bringing different groups together. However splits are appearing. Momentum isn't really a major force in the borough but is making some inroads and there seems to be renewed resentment among some of the Sikh community that they haven't had 'their turn' at having an MP in Southall. With the total implosion of the Tories and the failure of the local Lib Dems to make that much progress in the most favourable of circumstances the danger for Labour is that  internal tensions may come to the surface given there appears to be zero danger that the party will lose control of the borough any time soon.

I do not favour compulsory voting but compulsory silence from those too lazy to vote.

Credit where it's due, Labour are a very, very well oiled and slick machine in Ealing. Add into that the influx of students and you get the results we are seeing.I too am mortified, I'm no Conservative lover but still don't understand how they managed to lose a grip - from CON Council and MP to what we've got now in one fell swoop.And yes, for me, compulsory voting should be introduced, I actually did get fined once back in the day! And FWIW I think First Past The Post is ridiculous, Proportional Representation/Voting is a fairer solution than the current FPTP system.Mathematicians have been grappling with voting formulae for eons and have still yet to devise a voting system that's truly reflective of the electorate.

Only a third voted labour.  And taking in the non voters less than one sixth of the electorate.Maybe voting should be compulsory like in Australia; or nearer home Belgium and Greece.No doubt there are downsides?

Although the Brexit Party won the largest vote of any single party overall this is a very worrying result for Leave. The combined Brexit/UKIP vote is well below that of the explicitly pro-EU parties (LD, Green, Change UK) and the pressure for Labour to become explicitly Remain is overwhelming with Emily Thornberry clearly terrified by the hammering Labour took in Islington. The pattern of voting suggests there would be a 60% vote in favour or remain in a second referendum even without the votes in Scotland and Northern Ireland in.Perhaps even Boris Johnson might be persuaded to switch sides given that the Conservatives came a poor fourth in Hillingdon. The majority he has in his constituency would be the smallest ever held by a Prime Minister if he was to achieve his lifelong goal and the implosion of the Tory vote strongly suggests he would lose if an election was held in the near future.
