Who Will Speak For The Adulterers?

It has been quite noticeable that the protests outside the Sultan of Brunei's place in Osterley and the Dorchester Hotel have made it seem that the only problem with his new laws is that it will involve the stoning of homosexuals. While there is no dispute that the medieval brutality of this is abhorrent it does seem to be that the new laws cover adultery which I would imagine like here, is by far the 'crime' most likely to be subject to this sanction.You are going to have to accept my word that adultery is not something I have ever engaged in but many of the people who I most love and respect in this world have done. Given knowledge of their personal situations I cannot accept they have done anything let alone that they have committed a crime. However, in the protests against Brunei's laws there almost seems to be an assumption that it is less bad to stone adulterers than people from the LGBT community because the former have done something wrong. Shouldn't the protests be against stoning per se rather than the use of this barbaric group on just one of its intended targets?

I see there has been a similar reaction to comments by Australian rugby player Israel Folau. I don't qualify for eternal damnation by virtue of being a member of the LGBT+ community but do tick a number of other boxes for the fires of hell.  The media seems to be very relaxed about this and has assumed I won't be offended. In this they are probably right as I am actually quite grateful to Mr Folau for the warning and would say to him in recent years every time I do get drunk I repent for at least three days afterwards.

That reminds me of one of my all-time favourite jokes.Jesus says to the crowd around the woman taken in adultery 'Let whoever among you that is without sin cast the first stone'. There's a lengthy pause, then a stone comes flying out of the mob and hits the woman hard in the face. Jesus sighs and says, 'Not you, Mother!'I'm here all week.

I think you are right. There is an unspoken assumption that perhaps adulterers deserve what they get. If only there was a story or a parable about a woman being taken in adultery that could teach us what the correct response actually is...

I suppose one could argue that gay people are born gay whereas adulterers choose to commit adultery. I can't help suspecting that far more women adulterers will get stoned to death then men though.

The key here is the phrase "LGBT community".To my knowledge, there is no equivalent community of those who are inspired to campaign about adultery specifically.  On the other hand, over the last 30 years, there has been no shortage of protests against unjust laws across the world.
