Message:Working in Parker’s was my first Saturday job 50 years ago when I was aged 12! I did look older and may well have lied about my age, if I was even asked. Trusted with the tills, bread slicing machine, and selling bread and cakes and taking orders for dozens of small bridge rolls. They used to make really delicious minced lamb pies, and the same regular customers would come in every Saturday morning for the same order. ‘A milk loaf’ ‘a split tin’ ‘a large farmhouse sliced’.... If there were cream cakes left over on a Saturday evening Mrs Parker would make us up a box to take home. That was a real treat and made me many friends! I revisted last year and I’m certain they had exactly the same bread shelves as when I was there and they looked absolutely fine. Two of Mrs Parker’s daughters were at the same school as me, as I recall, together with Tommy Cooper’s daughter. All a few years older than me. Those were the days!
