Most of our automotive pollutant problem was caused by stupidity. Years ago each council was responsible for its own road network, and there was no legal requirement for joined up thinking with the rest of London. I remember a newspaper stories from my youth saying it took 5 hours to get from Kensington to Croydon, and traffic was not a problem then. At that time, idiots ruled the roost, and backhanders were the norm. To get out of our self induced problems we got even more stupid. Our greatest polluting roads was the result, The A30, M4, and the Western Avenue. Every one of those mega polluters was built to serve one purpose, to get people in and out of inner London. Unfortunately someone realised you could get the heavy stuff into the neighbourhoods, making industrial estates more economically viable when positioned within the community rather than outside. Today you have the resulting high asthma levels and lots of dead people. Add to that the idiots who think that both the wife and husband, along with the kids should be able to park outside their own house and pollution runs riot on a borough wide scale. In the dictionary pollution is defined as the presence in or introduction into the environment of a substance which has harmful or poisonous effects, and playing my pollution is better than your pollution is part of the problem.
