Was That Wise Hilary?

I've just been looking at some coverage of today's Labour party conference and a bit of a stir has been caused by a delegate from the Ealing Central and Acton constituency Hilary Wise. She made a speech to congress in which she said that the accusations of anti-semitism in the Labour party were overblown and the number of actual instances were miniscule. She blamed the growing the perception that Labour was anti-semitic on neo-Liberals withing the party and the mainstream media. She got a very positive reception from the hall although the chair apparently warned her for some of the language she used. I do wonder if Jeremy Corbyn was in the hall if his heart sank when she got up to speak. He has been spending the last few weeks trying to put this issue to bed and was presumably hoping that the conference would talk about things like renationalisation and higher taxes for the rich. Anything but Jews or Brexit basically. The other thing that really should have given Hilary pause for thought is that people are going to wonder about the motivations of anyone who solely focuses on the activities of Israel. By the standards of the middle east it has killed relatively few of its minorities.  While it is certainly true the Israelis tend to overreact to provocation, provoked they certainly are. The rights that a Palestinian has in Israel are significantly more extensive than they would have in Lebanon. This is an area of the world where there are a lot of bad actors and a lot of governments who don't behave the way they should including Israel. The question really is why do so many people in the Labour party think that it is exclusively the one run by Jews that is a problem?

Hilary, I'm not sure whether or not you used particular words is particularly relevant. I wasn't quoting you verbatim but have accurately reflected what you have said. Your speech can be found online so anyone can check this if they want. The point I was making was not that you or anyone else is anti-Semitic but that the leadership of the party would not have welcomed you making the argument that you did. Your contention that the problem is miniscule and is only an issue because it has been blown out of proportion by a biased media is contradicted by Momentum who insist the opposite is the case. The details of the statement on the matter are on this link. Specifically they say, "Current examples of antisemitism within the Labour Party are not only a problem of a few, extreme ‘bad apples’ but also of unconscious bias which manifests itself in varied, nuanced and subtle ways and is more widespread in the Labour Party than many of us had understood even a few months ago." They go on to state, "Momentum’s NCG believes that accusations of antisemitism should not and cannot be dismissed simply as right wing smears nor as the result of conspiracies." Very few people will argue with you that some of the actions of the Israeli government are reprehensible but within the context of the Middle East they are not obviously the worst in terms of persecution of minorities and killing people. Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Syria are unarguably worse yet it was Israel that was most passionately denounced in the conference chamber. Can you not see how people outside of the party will find it hard to reach a benign interpretation about why this would be happening?

Not accurate, Mr O Shea?In the interests of accuracy, in my speech at the Labour Party conference I mentioned neither neoliberals nor Jews. The chair did not warn me about language I used, she warned me to be careful of my language – which I was.The number of proven cases of anti-Semitism in the party is indeed minuscule.  There are many cases pending, we do not know who the accusers are (or what their motives might be), because they remain anonymous. But usually people are deemed innocent until proved guilty. You hinted that criticism of Israel must be motivated by anti-Semitism (in itself a horrible accusation, thrown around far too readily). Why not criticise other countries? Partly because Israel claims to be a Western-style democracy but does not behave like one. Partly because western governments are politically and economically supportive of Israel, despite its multiple daily violations of international law, some of which I have seen at first hand. Partly because Britain has played a major role in the region from the First World War onwards and therefore has a special responsibility for the outcome of its policies. You say Jeremy Corbyn has been trying to ‘put this issue to bed’, which I’m sure is true, but actually impossible when spurious or anonymous accusations keep flooding in, seized on but not questioned by the mainstream media. So what is the real reason for this smear campaign? To prevent a left-wing government and to silence criticism of Israel.Hilary Wise
