As of today Ealing Central Library is closed, a new dark age dawns

As of today Ealing Central Library is closed for the foreseable future. A new dark age dawns in one of the most affluent parts of the world. Will it ever re-open?

I agree that closing libraries or more than decimating the services they offer to the community is a disaster.I'm not sure that this is any worse a time than any other though - it would be much worse to close it as students start to flood in to revise, later in the academic year.This is the poster that was in the Central Library window just before it closed:

The fact that so few people have responded to this thread tells its own story unfortunately.Similarly a few weeks ago ago Ealing Libraries decided tono longer subscribe to the Times Digital Archive.This was one of the few online reference resources  which Ealing Library provided for users which can't be accessed in any other way. As Gale the providers don't offer private paid for subscriptions, at any price.However as with a lot of things because so few people use these facilities or are willing to make a fuss -The Council realise they can get away with it,michael adams...

I knew there was a plan afoot to close the main library but I did not realise it was so soon and would take so long to replace.  I become increasingly disappointed in a council who only cares about building flats and destroying lovely old buildings and losing our heritage as a town and now our facilities.  It is not just the old either - lots of younger people who have them at home but parents/siblings etc. using it and so they can come and use in a library. (now past tense)

I came across one gentleman on the 65 bus this evening who lives in South Ealing. He was coming back from Acton Library where he had travelled to earlier in the hope of using the Inernet access. Sadly at closing time there were still twenty people before him waiting to use a terminal. He lives close to Northfields Library, however it is part time and is closed for more than half the week (opens 31 hours a week apparently). Normally as he is not that computer-literate he would have used Ealing Central Library Internet access.This does not auger well for Ealing Council's planned Central Ealing "smaller library", perhaps a bigger library with more PCs?
