Are You Really Still on Facebook?
I was pleased to read there has been a surge in the number of people shutting down their Facebook accounts. I was lucky enough that several years ago my more technologically aware colleagues at work talked me through slowly and carefully the reasons why I shouldn't join. As they pointed out, it is important to remember with Facebook you are not the customer, you are the product. You think you are getting something for free but this multi-billion pound company which has a level of global domination that we have never experienced before has very sophisticated ways of making money from you. When I try to persuade family members to get off it they say they are very careful about giving out personal information. To this my colleagues have pointed out that Facebook is aware that people are aware that they may be being monitored and have just become more sophisticated in interpreting the massive amount of data they harvest from even relatively light users. According to them the real problems with it aren't really politics but health. Even the vocabulary you use and your sleep patterns can be used by diagnostic tools that are increasingly being employed and Facebook will know more about you than your doctor. It won't tell you that you might be sick - it will sell that information to third parties.Delete your account now.
