Mushroom season in Ealing
As autumn progresses so does the mushroom season. All around us are mushrooms of all sorts edible and inedible. I came across one today growing in South Ealing that I would definitely NOT eat. This is perhaps the biggest toadstool that I have ever seen. Measuring over five inches this Fly Agaric, or Amanita Muscaria has taken serveral days, if not a week to get to this size.In Polish it is called a Muchomor (Mucha means fly in Polish, and Mort means death in Latin) and that belies its use as an organic domestic insecticide. The Muchomor would be placed or crumbled into some milk and the combination would then be used to catch and kill household flies that would eat the combination. This used to be common practice through Europe hence the "Fly" in Fly Agaric and the Musc of Muscaria comes from the Latin name for a housefly musca domestica.Anyway here is a picture of this fine example of South Ealing's wild:
