A friend tweeted, 'My son and nephew just ran down & caught a guy stealing from the Co-op - manager rewarded w a bottle of Sprite ' How would you as a parent respond to this manager?

V nice gesture, i would say. Was it Acton, Pitshanger or South Ealing? Irrelevant but just ot of interest.

The manager also has an ethical dilemma. Unless they are trained they will be told not to tackle shoplifters. But if a member of the public was given a significant reward for doing this then why shouldn't staff be to. Given that most shoplifters are drug addicts catching them usually isn't the end of the problem.

Thank him for his kind gesture? If you are implying that the bottle of sprite was an inadequate rewards you are forgetting that stock controls at large chains are so tight that the manager would have little discretion about what he or she could give away. They may even have paid for it out of their own pocket.
