Police & Non MOT Vehicle

What are peoples opinion regarding a vehicle with no MOT?The DVLA say call 101. This was done & met with a pretty much couldnt care less attitude by the police operator ( even after Sir Bernard Hogans lip service speech at start).Full details were provided & the answer was if a unit was passing or in the area they would take a look!!A complaint was also raised via crimestoppers, following checks on DVLA site to verify vehicle status,no action was taken by police for some reasonHow is it enforcers can see spilled coffee yet when something more confrontational comes up they bury heads.I always thought no MOT meant insurance was invalid

I have reported many 'abandoned/unMOT'd/untaxed' vehicles in my ward and beyond. Usually removed within a week or two.If only the Gov.uk had an app for this sort of checking stuff including checking for licensed waste people/firms or indeed unlicensed!

Having checked up I  stand corrected that one can check a vehicle online.However it is supposed to be for checking your own vehicles and not other vehicles.  There is a note on this on the DVLA site but buried away and limits the amount of vehicles you can check. There is also a limit on checking the ownership of a vehicle. It can be a breach of the data protection act to do so.That said I checked to see how many past cars in the family are still in existence and no limit was imposed.The latest comments are correct. A taxed and insured vehicle does not require an MoT unless being driven on a public road.  It can be parked on any public highway where permitted.This is because a vehicle may awaiting a spare part or the driver/keeper absent.Even newish vehicles, can fall foul of parts availability, it gets worse as a vehicle gets older.Shortly, certain vehicles may no longer be required to have an MoT at all. ( Not the best idea, In my opinion) or may become voluntary or bi-yearly.  These vehicles will also be tax exempt but still fully legal to be kept on a public highway in the whole of the UK.

Re tax you can report to DVLA who usually clamp it and issue up to £1000 fine, ive seen quite a lot of these yellow clamps on cars in Ealing recently. Ealing Council criteria to treat as an abandoned vehicle is to wait until tax has expired for two months or more before any formal action . You can also check the status of car insurance on askmid.com - a very handy tool.

Police must stop the offending vehicle "on the move". It is legal to keep a car on the road without an MOT so long as its not driving. Police would need to comply with RIPA in order to wait and observe a vehicle until it moves, clearly its not practical to use a police resource to sit up on a car until it moves for a £100 ticket. That police resource needs to be used elsewhere. Its not a simple case of knocking on the front door and issuing a ticket. On the plus side, the MOT will get picked up on ANPR at some stage. Insurance is not invalidated just because a car has no mot.

May be they should adopt the attitude of the BBC when pursuing households that do not possess a TV licence.  That is, start on the assumption that everyone is guilty and let the accused prove otherwise.

Im just frustrated at the lack of police action. All evidence is on record & provided for them, yet they drag their heels

on the DVLA site there is a box to input a vehicle registration, be it your own or someone else,sThis was input & it states quite clearly, the offending vehicle has had no MOT since November 2016.I think too its possible to check the tax status & report defaulters on 101

How can you know a vehicle has no MoT.Indeed how can anyone know if a vehicle is taxed?Or even has a parking permit or is insured.There was a time when some of this was easily identified. If untaxed also likely to not be MoT'dWe don't have tax discs, insurance stickers or Mot stickers or even parking permits displayed in cars.So apart from those with special reading equipment, it's impossible to tell.And thus unlikely that anyone would go to the trouble of reporting a vehicle as there is no valid evidence to do such.
