ROUGH SLEEPERS

According to statistics 4000+are sleeping rough in the U.K,1000+ IN London,We should hang our heads in shame that the Government and the Councils allow this to happen.John.

It is strange state of affairs when a housing trust is content to leave a large property empty for the last 4 or 5 years near my home. They had permission to extend but nothing happened.How can they just leave this property empty, surely it is time to act and make it habitable again?Perhaps the council should make a compulsory purchase on this property?

Actually there are people who are working in this country who are homeless. At a winter night shelter there are several people who would otherwise be on the streets that work. also i know people who work long hours and have slept at Terminal 3 at heathrow for a few nights and then stayed in a cheap hotel for the odd night as the council wont help them. So this is the truth. The facts are that governments have lied to us so that cheap labour was available for the big corporations. even with brexit do people expect suddenly folk to leave. in fact some people will probably arrive soon so as to be here before any new rules apply. also as we have no id card system or proper track of people living here, can we expect mass deportations. As the border agency (funny how the government takes a department renames it an agency with new logo and then causes it to fall apart) can not manage at the moment this wont happen. People have been let down. last night i saw something about building firms actually training local young people in London!! amazing when previously they were relying on imported cheap labour.

Dennis the truth of it is that many of the people who are homeless are from abroad. and many homeless are in work. some overcrowded housing. many people came here because the options back home do not exist. but also our economy is a success for the billionaires but a race to the bottom with the minimum (actual maximum) wage for so many people. in fact we could say that unfettered immigration was encouraged in order to make the rich richer and ensure that wages were kept low. when we look at BREXIT and Trump we see that the disenfranchised have voted for billionaires telling us how the liberal elite has given your jobs away. This is true that the pro-globalisation people have failed the people of Britain and the US. But now we will find that the Vultures are waiting to pick our bones.

Everybody sympathises with the homeless ! But unlimited immigration will inevitably increase homelessness ! When I point this out I am called racist , can't we all have an intelligent conversation ?

There but for the grace of God go I, is often said by people and it is true. Many stories and sadly the rules about not having an address in order to apply for Jobs is so true. also no access to benefits unless you have an address. These are the roadblocks to deny people a chance to lift themselves out of this situation. When you look at house provision then it is not so much about building affordable homes but building social rented accommodation that is required. A sad reflection on our modern house price obsessed society.

Philippa,I hope it works,in addition to holding a full time position in the emergency services,i did in my free time engage with the homeless helping then in many ways,i also had the great opportunity to know them,why they were in the plight they were,and help many of the out of this type of life for good,so these people who shout rant and rave at my commentssould think before the y put pen to paper,regards,John.
