LAX is similar to Schipol, people who live practically next door have less noise from planes than we do in Ealing because the flight paths are mostly out to sea. However, air pollution from LAXs 4 runways is been greater than expected and effects a very wide area. I agree that a Boris Island solution should not have been written off, planning from scratch for a large capacity airport makes more sense. There will be no mitigation possible for noise pollution unless everyone opts for a sealed, indoor existence. As for air pollution if the Heathrow option goes ahead there will be a point of no return economically after which promises can be broken with abandon. Or like many other mitigating schemes eg congestion charging they will just turn out to be ineffective years down the line, Oxford Street remains massively polluted despite various initiatives. By the time any adverse long term health effects are revealed it will be too late.
