Joanna, the likes of the chained supermarkets sell most beer (Lager and ales) at a loss leader. This is evident when you compare a Bottle of London Pride from Sainsbury is £1.50 where my local corners shops sell at £2.60, the other at £2.99. Those 500ml bottles are .87 of a pint.So factor in the wholesale cost, plus transportation, staff wages, other overheads such as electric, gas, water, business rates, refuse collection, sky tv subscription, licensing that pint of beer is pretty much squeezed out of profit. I've provided you with the profits of Fullers which I would say is modest considering their turnover of £321.5 million, yes that's right the BIG business that you talk of only made around an 11% profit and yet you are saying they are overcharging. I say they are running a business that employs a large amount of staff that is a large benefit to the local society who then contribute in other ways and of course pay tax. If you find the pubs you visit confrontational maybe you should stay away, they're clearly not for you. I personally find my local pub very welcoming and non confrontational.
