Parking Outside Your House

How do you fell regarding "neighbours" cars or others, parking outside your property?Lets start with that

Driving used to be fun, I enjoyed going for a spin on a Sunday. Now its more a chore, bus lanes, covert cameras, parking restrictions by the dozen,traffic calming.A lot is necessity but the majority a money making ploy.I still actually enjoy driving, much rather drive than rely on public transport, all to often below par

Now that would be lovely - not having to worry about getting home before there are no spaces left.  It would have to be a shared car because it can be bad enough now if you have to go out several times in a day remembering just where you parked last.There was a good little film (I think it was real!) with a car in Cairo with an extra wheel which helped in parking it in a smaller space.We also have to take account of all the people who live in flats above shops on roads with no stopping at all who want to have cars...

I rarely have any1 who visits staying overnight - due to being Billy no mates & family have no cars, which is not an excuse. What I did when I went way, be it Liverpool or Manchester, where possible asked the resident if they minded my car being left for a day or two outside their house. Of course with the introduction of cpz even in areas where its not necessary this has become more inconvenient.As for driverless cars, I used to enjoy driving. I still do in part but any journey needs planning carefully for restrictions about parking, very careful concentration on traffic regulations, bus lanes/no entry/no left or right turn etc

If some of the predictions about the future of driverless cars are correct then most people will not own their own but just rent them as and when.  So there will be less cars, working more hours a day (think commercial aircraft that can be in economic use for 80% of the time) and less pressure on parking spaces.  And even if you still want your own driverless car you can get it to drop you off outside your door and ask it to toddle off and find itself somewhere to park.

The hard fact is too many people to small a place. Everything is being concentrated in this part of the UK and a handful of other cities and the infrastructure cannot cope because it was never intended for such a huge and rapid population growth.New Trains are coming but with up to 40% less seating and what seat there are are being deliberately designed to provide minimal comfort to prevent occupation and minimise the levels of complaint.The big problem is us. We do not complain we whinge and we do not follow up our complaints when we do.In a recent conversation about a raging debate on this very forum it transpired that jut 2 out of some 14 posters actually made any sort of representations to those who are responsible for the problem and those who may be able to make changes.So we make the beds we sleep in.

Also public transport just does not cut it anymore. Trying to get onto a tube train at rush hour requires a high level of fitness, the desire to stand for an hour while in transit, and beta blockers to keep blood pressure down.

Bela, I have the traffic management order ready for that strip of road where those vans are parked by the traffic lights. Because the actual paint job is actually peanuts comparatively to the legal cost, I'm waiting for the CPZ consultation to go ahead on the Village Park Estate shortly. If residents want it then the corner line painting will be in conjunction with the CPZ order. If not, I will have a few more highway orders to do early next year so I will bundle it together. As for the van hire company, Popes Lane corridor funding for improvements along there will eliminate non-stop parking by such vans. Won't eliminate it because people will need to park somewhere but it will cut out the continuous parking.

As long as the vehicle is not breaking any laws they are entitled to park where and when they like.There are, undoubtedly, too many cars for the residential spaces available. So it becomes first come, first served.And, Mr. Yale, what if you were to visit friends or family for a day or two, or even longer, travelling in your car.Where would you park it? Outside someone elses house perchance.

You are lucky if you can leave your car outside your house.  There are many who are lucky if they can find a place in their own street.

im not chastising or disagreeing necessarily, I value your opinion. So you have no qualms about leaving a vehicle outside someones house if you went away - so long as its taxed etc?

We need to be proactive about this and speak up as the British have a tendency to just vote with their feet. The internet and the Tfl travel finder are good for this.  Travelling on buses has changed a lot with the signage telling you what/where the next stop is and oyster cards make it easier.

It can be a big problem when people park their large work vans outside overnight as it greatly reduces the amount of space.  More children can't afford to move out and in fact many move back home home with increases the problems with extra cars.  It is important that we make sure that our children gain confidence and practice using public transport instead of what certainly used to happen in some families where they were given a car as soon as they were old enough to drive.  It can be easier to learn to drive when you are younger though.

We have a big problem with a van rental company taking up lots of parking spaces with their many vans. And also a huge lorry and a van permanently parked obscuring the traffic lights on the corner of Popes Lane and Lionel Road North.

there is a car in the road where clearly the owner has gone "away". Been dumped outside someones house since sunday. Feeling is leave it elsewhere

But how many can car share.? The supply of car club cars if very small and replacements can take hours to be installed and really only good for short trips.Anyone who uses public transport already knows it is way past safe capacity in the rush hours and now pretty much at capacity at all other times. Cycling is not always practicable if you have work equipment or tools and age and fitness takes it's toll especially in hilly areas like  here. We can't all be built like Bradley Wiggins and maintain that beyond ones 40s.Like it or loathe it it is the affordable car that has allowed ordinary working people choices and freedoms and brought opportunity to millions that would otherwise have been impossible. The inability to accommodate it is down to politics and myopic and idealistic rather than pragmatic planning.  Quite a few households are considerate if they have a few people each with a car.They will shuffle the cars about to ensure that one is across a driveway and not outside someone else's house. We've always done this. and never leave a car outside anyone else's home.  It's not possible in every street but in streets where residents actually talk to each other, moving cars about to accommodate another neighbour is common. What is not so common now are residents that do actually know each other.More than adequate parking as well as cycle parking needs to be factored into every development large or small.

We used to have a garage which worked that system with all the cars that they serviced.  We would have ten of their cars parked in a row and nowhere for residents to park. We then voted for a CPZ. There are a lot of problems with that though including a drastic reduction in the amount of parking space and it is very difficult to have casual visitors.  The garage moved on...  The promised re-evaluation was a joke.  The CPZ cost has carried on rising...  We have too many cars and should encourage other forms of transport for those while able including car share which you can find near many stations.

thats my point, or the views of many in my street, I use the term etiquette, & referring to SK, one household moves a car from outside their house & puts the 2nd temporarily in place. When it returns they move about again leaving the 2nd taking another neighbours "spot"

So what happens when there are several individuals living independently in one house and they all have cars?Much of Ealing is full of houses that are divided into flats or even bedsits and many are owned by the flat dweller. How do you decide who shall and shall not have a car?Not everyone can walk cycle or take public transport. Not everyone works down at factory on the same shift 9-5Not everyone works 9-5 Mon to friday in the same place.That's the way it is.What is needed is planning to accommodate real life, which it currently falls way short of and to factor in the real way we live and not the idealogical whims of trendy fads.

You get a fork lift to enable stacked parking? Seriously though, there is a see-saw design to enable "safe" stacking.

I'm with Paul on this one. If it bothers you so much then pay the council for a dropped kerb and build a drive in your front garden.

Im aware of that,what frustrates many people is the lack of respect or thought over parking. One house in particular makes sure the main car is permanently outside their house then plants the second anywhere. If they go away this could be for days.These owners know which neighbour or house has a car & the feeling is they should put it elsewhere so parking outside your own property is feasible.One car per property in effect

As long as the vehicle is taxed and is not contravening any other traffic laws, they are allowed to park anywhere on a public highway (but not on footpaths/pavements) where it is legal to do so.You do not have any rights to park outside your house, but most car owners seem to think they do.

Well that is London and any other built up area.  I am sure they only park outside your property when their "own" has no space.
