Not sure which bits you do/do not understand.Microsoft was the original bodge job for what was intended to be a one-off IBM personal computer, IBM were only interested in expensive main-frame computers running Unix. There are now a few very stable and secure free open source "Unix compatible" operating systems, including BSD which drives recent Apple computers, and Linux which will run almost anything from a credit card size Raspberry Pi to a supercomputer, and is usually the embedded operating system running commercial hardware such as your modem. The government is giving all schoolchildren over 11 a very basic BBC Microbit, but the slightly more expensive Raspberry Pi is much more capable. There is more information on my website, www.chrisbell.org.uk which is running on a Raspberry Pi (The website was moved a week ago, and the new address should be in operation).
