Our streets: Filthy Ealing

How many of you are aware that Ealing Council recently switched from weekly sweeping of streets to three-weekly ones?Ealing Borough is rapidly taking on an appearance that would bring shame to a Third World country.

The fact is a 2% rise on the highest of council tax brackets would only add £53 (band H) to the whole years charge, but would increase revenue for the council by £2.2 million given the current revenue from Income tax alone is £110 million.So why exactly haven't they raised this?

Ealing Labour Group has bever had much time for the disabled or adults in need of care. It is a political group rather than a social group. The fact that Poltical Assistants are still employed and paid for by the Council while disabled care centres are closed emphasizes this situation. We have seen extra charges imposed in adult respite care and for Council Tax for the disabled and their carers (who do what they do out of love and not for money saving the state a fortune). The two percent hike in Council Tax for adult social care could have helped keep many facilities for the ill and for the disabled open. Once a leading Labour apparatchik told me that there were only two homeless in Ealing, who didn't want to live indoors, although there were already hundreds of rough sleepers in Ealing, as these people were not legal, and were not signed on, they did not exist and so were not homeless. This mentality prevails today in Ealing Labour, with the emphasis on ignoring those that are not part of the latest (Stalinist) five-year plan.

Julian Bell said somewhere that Ealing didn't need to do that because they could cover it.  It is a question that I too have asked.  Keeping the elderly in their homes is supposedly cheaper and is fine if you don't need any or much help.  However when the help that you need escalates it can get a lot more difficult.

Why did Ealing not increase the Council Tax by the permitted 2% (for adult social care) this year?

Don't forget that the responsibility for the cuts lies with the government who have cut the money for councils. You're probably complaining about policies you voted for.

I walk down South Ealing Road most week day mornings. The rubbish is simply dumped on the pavement, ripped apart by foxes, then strewn across path / road. Helpfully, the road sweeper clears the road but obviously pedestrians can just jump over the rubbish as that is just left. Oh and not forgetting sweet smell of rubbish rotting and flies adding to the Ealing Experience! BUT let's not forget is it 9 years of council tax being frozen which is proudly displayed on Percival House...shame the cuts to services for the elderly, young, disabled, and vulnerable are not equally advertised.I love Ealing and the council are squeezing the life out of it.

Rats have been seen in Perivale area. Streets are very bad beer cans ect. Not a good situation.

Haven`'t seena Streeta  Cleaner for weeks ?  Well look no further than Hillcrest Road W3. I can be seen in my pinny and  Marigold  gloves , clasping a black bin bag  the day after the bin men have been . It started with picking up the nn residents DOG POOH and escalated from there!

Isn't that part of the problem?  They each expect the other to be managing the contract and so it ends up being managed by neither.

and while we were on holiday I suppose as well.  A good time to bury bad news.The problem is that our streets have been degraded by these oversized unsightly out of date plastic monstrosities.  If our houses and gardens were all big enough for them to be hidden then they would have been but they are not.

I am told by a reliable council source that Amey were quietly told that the street sweeping could be reduced from weekly to three-weekly while our attention was diverted by the wheelie bin row.

Some parts of the borough are very dirty,seen cleaner and more organised favela's.I dont want to live is a dirty unkept area so brought forward my permanent move away from ealing.Ealing council,you have let me down.

I have repeatedly asked Ealing Council, and Bassam Mahfouz directly, to confirm and announce publically the changes to the street cleaning schedules since the bins were introduced. But I have met a wall of silence. Where did the three-weekly info come from?  If true, we are doomed to live ankle deep in leaves and litter for ever.

There are posters around the borough which proudly tell us that council tax hasn't gone up since 2008.We are clearly getting what we pay for.

Our streets in Hanger Hill have not been swept properly since the new wheelie bin regime came into operation in early June so where did the  three-weekly regime come from?  The only anything that has happened is that a gully sweeper did a desultory round a few weeks ago which skirted around the park cars!  I agree that the streets of the 'queen of the suburbs' are a disgrace...
